Well, as I've already implied, I don't think that the stats comparison makes much sense…
yards and TDs were harder to get in Fouts' era, and INTs were more frequent.

Fouts was the unquestioned master of the passing game from '79-'81…
as much as I like Rivers, I don't think we've seen him similarly dominate an era...

I'm a huge fan of both, but if at the end of his career, Rivers is thought of as the best ever then that's a good thing

Fouts is the greatest bolt QB. Rivers is knocking on that door and has never had the talent around him that Dan had.

You could use a similar argument in that Rivers generation has Peyton Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. The statement that he didnt dominate an era is an unfair comparison, as 79-81' era wasn't loaded with future HOF QBs like it has been for the last 6yrs with Rivers.

To be fair the rules do favor the passing game more today than they did then.

Even so, based on those projections Rivers would shatter Fouts' numbers. That still has to count for something.

This is a great nostalgic thread. I can still remember seeing the greats play---Alworth, Hadl, Mix, Unitas etc. then Fouts, Winslow, Joiner, Benirschke.....I appreciate them so much more now than I did then. :helm3:
