Leaked letter stokes fire between Kiffin, Raiders

Attorney for ex-coach reportedly says it's an 'assault' before deposition

A lawyer for former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin reportedly fired back at owner Al Davis on Friday night after a letter Davis' team sent to the University of Tennessee was leaked to CBSSports.com.

Kiffin, now coach of the Volunteers, is scheduled to give a deposition next week in his grievance against the Raiders. He was fired in September for cause after what Davis described as acts of insubordination and lying. Kiffin is seeking two months pay for the time he was unemployed before being hired at Tennessee.

In an ESPN.com report, Kiffin's lawyer, Alan Loewinsohn, rebuked details of the letter dated Jan. 22, 2009, which was sent to Tennessee administrators by the Raiders.

"Starting with Al Davis' nationally televised press conference publicizing the firing the head coach Lane Kiffin last fall, the Raiders have continued to attack coach Kiffin in the media," Loewinsohn said in a statement reported by ESPN.com. "That assault continued today, long after he left the Raiders, when the Raiders issued a statement and 'leaked' a letter, a letter they wrote months ago to coach Kiffin's new employer, the University of Tennessee, in which the Raiders again attacked coach Kiffin's character.

"Starting next Tuesday at a hotel in Oakland, the Raiders will no longer be able to rely on unsupported allegations made in the media, as a key Raiders personnel, starting with Al Davis, will finally have to answer questions under oath at their depositions, a process that coach Kiffin is confidant will demonstrate that he was fired by the Raiders without cause and show that the continuing assault of allegations being made against him are false."

The letter, which was published on CBSSports.com, details the Raiders' grievances against Kiffin. The team believes Kiffin breached his contract, violated NFL rules and was insubordinate despite warnings from Davis.

Kiffin is scheduled to give his deposition Monday, with Davis to be questioned Tuesday.

Kiffen is still young and could have a great career in NFL if given the chance.

If you ask me, that was brilliant.
Seriously... what did he have to lose? What's the worst that would happen? Would he have to go back to coaching college football?

Nobody else was willing to give him a shot. Then again, he was only 32. He might get another shot. I was impressed. He had the players playing tough and did about as good as he could with very little talent and control. He would be a MAJOR upgrade for us!!!

From what I've read it's a long shot but Crazy Al gets deposed tomorrow and he may say some stuff that he'll have a hard time defending at the trial.

even if Kiffin wins, does he expect to be paid? How many times has Al been sued, lost, and has not paid up?
