I really hate the NFL sometimes.

I wouldn't have a problem with the rules if they were enforced uniformly. But they aren't. The officials are totally arbitrary in when they call them. This just gives the refs another opportunity to **** a team over at their own discretion. And once again, early in the season when the games "don't matter as much" (even though they ALL matter a great deal in a 16-game season) someone's gonna get ****ed over by this rule change because the NFL wants to make an example out of someone.

Then by the end of the season the refs will be ignoring it, as usual, unless it benefits someone like a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, or whichever team is high on the list of the NFL's man-love meter this year.

Yet another bad rule change. I think these guys just make dumb moves just so they look like they are doing something as a commitee.

Bad, bad move. As bad as the " in the grasp" rule that went away.

    Next new rule!
No driving through on tacks, only arm tackles allowed.........

    Then
    No hurdling defenders, its dangerous!

    Then
No bump and run coverage, because its hard on the reciever.......

    And then
    No pushing!!!

Goodell has got a serious case of vaginitis.

I know I will be in the minorit, but I have never understood why offensive players can jam a guys facemask and not defenders. As long as they still allowed stiff arm outside of the head I am OK with it from a logical standpoint. I will miss some of LT's stiff arms to the head though.

I would also be OK with going the other way and allowing contact to the head of offensive players as long as there weren't a clubbing or gripping of the facemask to increase equity in the rules. Either way.

I just think there is much of an argument that as of last year, offensive players could get away with more contact to the head.

That is one of the only times I've ever seen a defender actually get hurt during a stiff arm, and its because he came in with his head too high. Poor tackling is what it comes down too, really theres no excuse to even get stiffarmed at the NFL level.

I can't see a reason why a defensive player would want to go for the head. Seems like he's going to try to grab something if he's trying to make a tackle.

On the other hand if a runner is trying to ward of a tackler then why shouldn't he be able to bust the guy in the chops??

I agree with you. Stiff arms are great, but they shouldn't be able to go to the face.

My opinion of Goodell is rapidly approaching par with politicians.

It would appear that Goodell is a politician, with the NFL team owners his most-valued constituency.

    I don't know.

I guess I feel that I agree with the league that there is some inequity with how the rule is applied against O vs. D. I just am not sure if I like how they are trying to even that out.

I can understand a rule to keep hands off the face mask, but the top and side of the helmet ought to be legitimate. I've seen it called before, but almost always when it came off like a face mask call.

Theres a difference between an LT stiff arm and a runningback taking an open handed punch to the defenders grill.

I'm down with them calling the punch, but to eliminate the stiff arm is to eliminate a physical style of running the ball.
