The Official CoronaDoug Statement on Nate Kaeding

Well folks it is a day that most of you would consider a CoronaDoug holiday. I though am not going to celebrate an injury to any individual. I was hoping that this would be the season that Nate would get the monkey off his back (AKA "prove me wrong"). Though this injury is tragic, I hope that this will be the end to the Kaeding era in San Diego. I do perhaps feel kind of empty because I have grown accustom to making comments about Kaedings short-comings. It has been something I have done for numerous years now. Perhaps it may be the biggest part of my identity here?
The best outcome would be that we would bring in an individual that will be consistent and have the mental capacity to handle playoff/Superbowl pressure. I will look forward to supporting the newest member of the San Diego Chargers kicking team.

Enjoy your year off Nate. I will be waiting if you do return next season.

The "No More Nate To Hate" depression has set in way quicker than I expected...

It's ok CD, you can pick someone else to hate on this year by proxy. :D

This will not be the end of the Nate era in SD. He will be around for you to trash well after this season.

Maybe I should attend that tryout so I can become the new object of Doug's hate...even more so than when the Hokies trash the Hurrican'ts...

Don't laugh too hard, I could actually do this at one time many moons ago. :D

Anyone who thinks that our ALL Pro kicker Nate Kaeding will not be missed, or can easily be replaced by a guy who could not make 1 of the 32 NFL rosters this season, is simply kidding themselves.

The absence of Nate was already felt, in yesterday’s game when Norv elected to go for it on 4th & 20, from the Minnesota 25 yard line. That was well within Kaeding’s “automatic” range. We were down by 10 at the time, and a FG would’ve made it a 1 score game before the half. In the end it worked out in our favor, with Scifres later kicking a 40 yarder & all the extra points but he was merely a short term emergency replacement, not a long term fix. Mike doing the kicking also required us to utilize another holder, his usual job on placekicks and Weddle did a decent job in that spot role.

Whatever kicker we sign this week, he will not even be close to a good as Kaeding is, and it could affect our play-calling all season. We likely won’t be attempting as many 50+ yard kicks this season, especially if the new guy shanks on his 1st attempt at one. Norv definitely has the utmost confidence in Nate (as did Marty) which is why they both knew they could call on him at any point in a game and from any distance under 60 yards, and there was a better than average chance he would make that kick – opposing coaches & defenses knew that as well, before too long.

This is really sad for Kaeding a season ending injury on the first play of the game. If his head wasn't screwed up before now it has to be. Ole Tweety just can't catch a break or that damn bird.

Agree La Deezie, especially the one that Marty had confidence in Nate. No frickin way, especially after he choked on the Jets playoff game in his rookie season that we lost at home to a Chad Penninton led team:mad:

I think Nate might know what it feels like, since he made his last attempted game-winner of 50+ yards.

Kaeding's 52-yard FG beats grieving Bengals, clinches West for Chargers

Nate Kaeding is not an All Pro kicker. 2009 was his only "great" year.

In every other year of his carrer he never kicked more than 1 FG from beyond 50, and he hovered around the above average in FG % because he was the beneficiary of the only team in the NFL to finish 5 strait seasons with a top 5 offense. Its easy opportunities, nothing more.

He still is the most accurate kicker in NFL history. You can't really downplay that. He's automatic (in regular season) other kickers aren't as much.

Yeah I can, only 17 attempts from 50+ in his 8 year carrer, only made 10. Not going for them would tend to keep your percentage high.

Wouldn't you think that that's attributed to us having a good offense? In 8 years we've seen LT, Gates, Jackson and Rivers. I would hope we would rarely have to kick a figgy when we get inside the 40 or so...
