Chargers' English back among the practicing

For a change, and a rather remarkable one, there seemed to be a whole lot of healing going on Saturday at Chargers Park.

Ryan Mathews was running around and running through lines in an afternoon practice that had some clearly dialed-up intensity, that after oft-idled Antonio Gates did a bit of jogging through plays in the morning walk-through and took part in individual drills. Perhaps the most significant of all, however, was the return of outside linebacker Larry English to the practice field.

The play of English, recovering from his second surgery on a fractured left foot, left nobody on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform list.

“The good thing is, it didn’t hurt at all,” said English, who missed most of his rookie season as the Chargers’ first-round draft choice. “So right now, it’s just a matter of getting my feet back under me … It’s good to get out there, really contribute and earn my keep.”

English, who was projected as a starter, was working with the second-team defense Saturday. He’s expected to be in competition over the next few weeks with veteran linebacker Travis LaBoy, signed partly because of his San Francisco experience with new Chargers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky and installed with the No. 1 defense in English’s absence.

“He’s so anxious; he just wants to play,” head coach Norv Turner said of English. “He feels good, looked great running around out there. It’s another guy who can harass the quarterback and it’s another very physical player.”

English said the foot began progressing so well last week that there was some consideration given to getting him back in time to play in Thursday’s exhibition opener against Seattle, but as noted Turner, the Chargers wanted to be as sure as possible that English’s foot was 100-percent ready for the grind.

“That was one of the most important things to me, too, not going back and forth,” said English. “That’s why we took the time, took it slow.”

Also returning to the practice field was cornerback Shareece Wright, the third-round draft choice who’s been sidelined through most of camp with a muscle strain. Working out on the side field were injured linebackers Antwan Barnes and James Holt, wide receivers Vincent Brown and Richard Goodman and running backs Frank Summers, Curtis Brinkley and Brandon Sullivan.

“I expect to get four or five more guys back to practice over the next two or three days,” said Turner, whose team will leave for Dallas after Wednesday’s session and work out against the Cowboys before their Sunday game. “Those are the guys that need the practice.”

Turner said the Chargers are sticking with their plan to give “limited reps” in camp to Gates, who was withheld from team drills, to protect his problematic foot while preparing the perennial Pro Bowl tight end for the regular season.

    Nuts & Bolts

    • Wide receiver Adrian Cannon, an undrafted free agent out of Maryland, was released Saturday.

    • The Chargers have extended open practice for the public to include Monday and Tuesday’s 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. sessions.

foot injuries and surgery suck. Dude had two surgeries done to the same foot as the first one didn't work, which happens more with foot issues. If you don't believe in God, go out and break a couple bones in your foot. Your *** will be in his hands for healing after the doctors have done all that they can.

My question with English, besides his health, is his lack of playmaking. I've seen him run by the QB a number of times, but his technique or instincts seem a little off. It's time for him to show that he can use his athletic ability to make some sacks and QB hurries. I'll be very interested to see how he does in this upcoming game.

English is in the same position as a rook or free agent. He will have to play himself onto the roster, so I'll just wait and see what he does in the next two games. He needs to mix it up on special teams just like others who want to make the roster and haven't proven themselves yet.

How much $$$ do we save if we cut this "no load"? Seems to me we are just wasting our time and reps waiting on this P-o-S. It's time to give he full time job to Barnes.

Not a fan of English. He's Buster Davis v2.0

maybe the dude needs glasses... missing the QB (most are 6ft+) is hard to do. Maybe AJ needs to make him an appointment at Lenscrafter!
