I'm not a fan of Merriman anymore, but it was rather refreshing to see him on the field again. He's solid depth behind Larry English and Shaun Phillips, and I think he is a good for for 3-4 DE on passing downs.

If you want to do it right you need quarterback hurries.

Have not yet been able to watch the game on tv, but from what I saw live, it did not look like he was mailing it in. He has been on the field about 20 plays this year and has 3 tackles and was in Garrards face on third down causing a hurried pass to bring up fourth down. If he continues to make an impact every fifth play I will be happy with it. I am not a fan of his production over the last couple years, but I will give him a few weeks of actually playing before I decide he is mailing it in. As an upcoming UFA he should be more motivated to perform this year than he ever has been.

This is a really stupid thread. No way Merriman mails it in this year. If he does, he will not get paid. He needs a big year to get a big contract.

    Dude has mailed it in.

He took pre-season and one game off.

Merriman will sandbag 3/4 of the season to save himself and not risk injury = puss-out

The last few games he will turn it on and say "lookie here" and in the mean time his teammates will want him gone.

Oh - and he will get a bigger contract than his last so monster season needed ? ....not really.

Igor did the same thing (sandbagging his last year) and the guys behind him were angry.

    Same thing....different player.

    Preach it brother!!

I'm going to post his stats every week.

Where can I find QB hurries? Not that he'll get any but Enormo makes a good point.

Common sense says play your azz off in your last year to prove you are worthy.

    That ain't happening here.

A new breed of parasite is growing in the NFL. Aholes who get phat before they get the jack.

F-them all. Get rid of these vermin.

Bingo... He doesn't look like a guy who is 'mailing it in,' he looks like a guy who's neither stronger nor faster than the guys he's trying to beat.

I'll have to re-watch the game but I don't think he played that badly. I recall several times seeing him get pressure or influencing plays. I think it's looking like he will never be the same player he was early on in his career but he's still a solid LB. For all his off the field antics the dude plays hard on game day.

I downloaded the game and re-watched it, and I was actually pretty impressed at how Merriman played. He was a bit tentative on a few plays and he made a couple mistakes, but he also showed some of the burst and power that has been missing the last couple years. He might have gotten a sack on one play, if the Jaguars LT didn't horse collar him and rip his helmet off, a play that resulted in a penalty. Merriman also had a couple of other effective bull rushes that hurried Gerrard and forced him to get rid of it. As long as he stays healty, I think Merriman could have a really good year.

Slow start and barring injury I expect him to be fully ramped up by Week 6. He's no dummy, despite some of his off the field behavior, and he knows what it is going to have to happen for him to get to the next level of pay. He wants to be considered an "elite" player, expect him to do well.

This is his second year back from a knee injury and it takes awhile to physically and mentally overcome that. That said, I don't see anyway he remains with the Chargers next year...not that you asked.

...and a calf injury. I'm starting to wonder if he will even be healthy enough this season to mail it in even if he wanted to.

This is why I am known as the prophet.

I also said in the gameday thread Tolbert would fumble because he carries the rock too loosely and he fumbled.

    Merriman is done.
