First-round pick Shawne Merriman acknowledged recently that his decision to skip the team's offseason workout program because of an issue with the wording involved in the injury-protection agreement for unsigned rookies definitely set him back in preparation for his first season. Merriman, unsure if the Chargers intended to use him at outside linebacker or defensive end, bulked up to 278 pounds in summer workouts. And trying to drop about 10 pounds, while pressing to catch up with what he missed, led to a strained hamstring that sidelined him for more than a week of camp. "I've been out of football for seven months," Merriman said. "People can see I was working out. But being in football shape and being in running shape is totally different."
