Many people had OLB Ben Leber penciled in to lose his job to first-round pick Shawne Merriman early in camp when Leber was forced to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle on Aug. 2, the same day Merriman ended his brief holdout. But we're told not to discount Leber (who should return in two weeks) just yet, as the Chargers will employ a versatile defense that has plenty of hybrid-type players rotating in, depending on the situation. Leber still figures to see plenty of playing time in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme and had a good first week of camp before the surgery. He gave way to rookie Shaun Phillips on passing downs a fair amount last season and figures to do the same again this year. In his first practices, after head coach Marty Schottenheimer said he expected the rookie to focus on playing linebacker, Merriman was lined up at defensive end and could rotate down there on a semi-regular basis on third downs to get the best group of pass rushers on the field.
