Last Sunday the Chargers became so frustrated with their lack of offensive production, QB Philip Rivers and star RB LaDainian Tomlinson were captured on TV getting into it, screaming to the nation just how close this team is to the boiling point.

Basically, something needed to be said and done and it turns out the youngster Rivers stepped up and did just that.
Several Chargers sources told FOX Sports that the team called a players' only meeting on Monday, the day after their public meltdown on the sidelines. The meeting was led by Rivers, a young quarterback who pulled a rather mature motivational move.

According to the sources, Rivers got up in front of his teammates, sans coaches, and delivered the message that the Chargers needed to stop fooling themselves, they are no longer a 14-2 ball club. Instead, they now needed to fight for every point, every yard and the team needs to claw away as if they're on the bottom fighting to get back up.

"He got up with some notes but he made great points," said one veteran player. "He said we are what we show on film and right now we're not showing a lot on film for people to be afraid of. I think it was Philip's idea but it was a strong message and good to see that he's stepping into that leadership role. He didn't say anything that was wrong. He told guys we all need to start taking care of our jobs and fight for everything. We just aren't as good as we thought. It kind of brought us back to Earth."

After Rivers, Pro Bowl LB Shawne Merriman and the locker room's leader Lorenzo Neal addressed the players as well.

While the meeting is a good step in the right direction, there was concern going into the Chiefs game that their entire season was on the line.

"There's definitely some of that thought going on in here because we're a young team," said one Chargers player. "People forget that but I don't know if we have the maturity to overcome starting off 1-3 and losinig to the Chiefs. Last year we had vets like Keenan (McCardell) and he's gone. Donnie Edwards is gone. We don't have Randall Godfrey. Aside from Lo (Lorenzo Neal), we don't really have vets. We have Pro Bowlers but not a lot of experience in dealing with losing. We're going to have to rely on a young core of guys to get over the adversity."

Somewhere in here there is a role for the coaches. LT is a vet. PR has been around a few seasons, Gates has been playing a little while. Norval is the head coach. He is responsible for getting the team ready to play. He is responsible for putting these guys in a position to win if the players execute. This team IS as good as they thought they were, but they are simply not playing up to that level. Part of that is on the players, but not the largest part. What really needs to happen is some aggresive play calling and for Norval to start showing some faith in his players to handle the game.

Remember leisure, Rivers is totally AJ's boy and AJ OWNS Norv and tells him what to do. As much as I'd like to see Volek as Rivers has made some BONEHEAD throws and with Volek's ability to get the ball downfield, I don't think that change will happen going into next week.

    Volek sucks too

Id rather take a shot with a young guy with potential and hope to hit it big than a vet with a proven record of losing

Either way, rivers shouldnt be starting next week

Whitehurst would be an upgrade over Phil but Volek would be an upgrade over Whitey. Don't get me wrong I love Whitey but Volek is VERY GOOD. Very calm passer who gets the ball where it needs to be.

Volek is 3-10 as a starter, hes not an upgrade over anyone

I mean what does it tell you that the titans were so eager to get rid of him and would rather have Kerry Collins as thier backup than Billy?

do you know that coaches have been frustrated with volek because he HATES throwing ****** little short route and checkdown passes? volek LOVES getting the ball down the field quickly. with billy it is bang, 18 yards, bang, 9 yards, bang 27 yards. and BTW i am still baffled why we run with lorenzo on 3rd and 1. EVERYONE knows EXACTLY where the chargers will run and that is right up the gut between the LG-C or C-RG gaps.

The only reason he threw for that muchw as because he was losing and HAD to throw that much

I mean sure he had 500 yards, but he had 100+ attempts in those 2 games, both of which were losses

Outside of those two game, he had 1600 yards with 9 TDs and 9 Ints (58% completion), which would give him a 74 QBR and a 3-5 record, which is what i expect from him, average play from an average player. I dont see anything special in the guy and dont get what everyone else see from him. Nothing from this past preseason changed my mind about him.
