(as much as anyone can have said thoughts)

While the grade for the 2015 draft class depends on Gordon, there's some impressive looking gems in this group. Perryman already brings the wood better than almost any Charger I've seen in years, Emmanuel might be the pre-season sack leader and looks way ahead of a FCS rookie, and Philon is looking really good.

Gordon gets an INCOMPLETE, too little to really know what to think about him. Seemed nervous but then again if he wasn't nervous in his f...irst NFL game I'd be concerned

I'm already loving this OL. Danny Woodhead had lanes you could drive a mack truck through on his touchdown run and most impressive was how Franklin and Watt cleared the way. Can't wait to see more of Fluker/Barksdale.

Attaochu if healthy will be a hell of a player. He's literally everywhere

If Brandon Oliver made 1/4 less cuts he'd be even better as a RB. Having said that I love how this guy treats every down like a battle and every game like a war, there's no quit in him and even though he's likely safe on the roster, he's fighting as if he's still at risk to be cut. Gotta love that.

    Clemens......ugh

If I had to pick between Wilson and Addae it's Addae without question. But still, can Addae stay healthy?

Never want to see anyone go down with injury. Not really gonna miss him on Defense, but he was looking decent on Special Teams.

Ugh. I can't even call that a rookie mistake, that's like the kid in high school that moves from WR to CB just because he's fast, and then he's caught off guard when he gets popped for the first time.

Definitely excited about Philon, he's playing a lot better than a guy who was projected to be at best an under tackle. Lot more power. He and Emanuel looking very good

Mager is making progress but lets be honest the team would have to be desperate to put him anywhere above 4th CB.

It's hard not to be bitter right now about the Mager pick.

To make it worse, it sounds like Carl Davis had a very strong debut. John Harbaugh referred to him (and this is a direct quote) as "Mr. Versatile."

Hopefully Philon pulls Telesco's bacon out of the fire on this one.

Gordon was disappointing, but so was the run blocking for him. From last year to now, much of the time when we show run by offensive formation, we cannot run the ball effectively.

On Thursday night, I thought Gordon looked very tentative and that he didn't have much in the way of holes to run through. Oliver looked much quicker and more decisive by comparison.

Further, I just can't get too excited about us catching Dallas with a draw play from a passing look.

When teams look at our offense and say, "Hey, they are going to run!" and we still run all over them, then, and only then, is it mission accomplished in the running game. We need to improve a lot to get to that point.

I expect us to improve as Gordon is a rookie, Fluker is at a new position and new OL players need time to gel. The real question, though, is how much improvement we will get.

I liked Emanuel a lot. I thought Perryman flashed some. I didn't see much from Philon that was either that good or that bad. He wasn't as quick as I would have hoped, but he wasn't as soft as I feared. He was just a guy and maybe that's okay for a rookie playing in his first preseason game.

We are still bad defensively against the run and even allowed Cowboy reserve players to run over our starters. We lack stout players and it is painfully obvious.

Oh please. These kinds of plays happen all the time. Mager was dialed in, trying to get a jam on the receiver and didn't recognize that it was a running play. It was a rookie play for sure, but not one he should be vilified for.

You have made up your mind about this kid and are looking for any evidence to support your opinion, instead of letting the evidence form your opinion.

I think Mager looked decent in coverage. Certainly room for improvement, but not bad for his rookie debut.

I definitely don't dislike the guy, he's got a great story, he has good physical skills for a S/NCB, I'm definitely rooting for him to make it. I think he's very much in the Marcus Gilchrist mold as the versatile DB who plays good STs.

The problem is, I don't have to search very hard to find evidence for my opinion.

Firstly, he comes from a much smaller program than Marcus Gilchrist, he did not cover ANY WRs who made it to the NFL last year. Not even an undrafted one. Also based on his college tape, he seems to have the Shareece Wright syndrome, where he allows really dumb completions right in front of him, and will often panic when he has to trail a receiver, leading to a lot of pass interference penalties. (If you don't like my opinion on this, feel free to form your own)

It's also worth noting that on the camp chatter on the kid hasn't been very good, and it showed on depth chart the Chargers released last week, where he was buried in the 4th or 5th team behind undrafted guys like Jordan Maybin and Manuel Asprilla. Basically I think he's at least 2 years away from being a guy you want to put up against the Emmanuel Sanders and Michael Floyd's of the league.

I'm hoping Tyrell Williams gets some more run week 2. I'm not talking about the fact he played a nice chunk of the 2nd half. That doesnt really count seeing that we came out in tight singleback big and singleback jumbo sets where everybody and their momma knew we were trying to just run the ball and kill clock. Not sure if that was the stategy to not let our backup qb lose us the game (like it matters) or to intentionally not see what our WRs could do. I dont know about everyone else, but I was hoping to see more passing attempts or formations.

I will acknowledge that the backup OLine didnt really provide much time, but I would still like to see them sling it a bit more.

I'm also pulling for Lambo to make the team. Not sure how consistent he can be as a place kicker but he definitely helps in the field position game. What I am a little confused about was Novak stated his offseason plan was to increase KickOff distance. I didnt get to see all his kickoffs, but it seems like it got worse. Before he could maybe get the ball 2 yards deep into the endzone. Now its like he is kicking it to the 5 yard line. And since I'm on Special Teams, Ty Williams looked decent as a gunner. And not just the obvious play were he downed the ball inside the 5 or 10 (cant remember now), but on a few other punts he was getting back there.

Even if Philon performs well, Mager is still an awful pick.

CB is our deepest position and Mager was rated as a round 4-5 guy.

By contrast, Carl Davis was rated as a round 1-2 guy, plays two positions which are of dire need for us (3-4 DE and NT) and his calling card is that he is immovable, even against double teams. In other words, he is exactly the player our team needed and was sitting there for us to take and we blew it big time.

At the end of the day, we could have re-signed Mathews and then drafted:

    1. B. Dupree (OLB)
    2. D. Perryman (ILB)
    3. C. Davis (3-4 DE/NT)
    4. K. Williams (RB)
    5. K. Emanuel (OLB)
    6. D. Philon (3-4 DE)

And we would still have had our 5th round pick from next year's draft.

    Mathews+K. Williams>>>Gordon
    Dupree>>>no player at all
    2016 5th round pick>>>no 2016 5th round pick
    C. Davis>>>Mager

All of that was possible without trading a single draft pick and teams that get how to run a 3-4 defense jumped all over Dupree (Steelers) and C. Davis (Ravens) when they presented as value picks.

    My dos centavos:
Not impressed with O-line or backup quarterbacks. OLB depth is another concern.
Sign Josh Lambo (carry him just as a kickoff specialist) and dump someone (I like Donald Brown more than most around here, but truth is he'd likely be sitting on a sofa somewhere if we needed to call him back).

Well the starting O Line didnt get much run... Wasnt thrilled with the 2nd unit, but wasnt really expecting to. God be with us if he have to ever use our backup QBs. I wouldnt with the LB depth. Yes the OLB as weaker than the ILB but I'm not too concern about it. Hopefully the injury to Tourek pushes them to get a vet during cuts. I for one wasnt looking forward to having him in coverage for us. I for one would hope we kept Lambo on, but I dont know if the roster has enough quality depth to keep him and Novak unless we get rid of some of the TE's we have on the final roster.

And I think / hope / pray we cut Donald Brown and if he need a back down the line, I agree that Brown will be available sitting somewhere on a sofa and we should keep his @ss there while we find other person with 2 legs to take over said duties.

As it is, I think Inman holds on to that 5th receiver spot. He has shown good strong hands and willing to fight for the ball when in the air. I then hope the 6th spot goes to Tyrell. He hasnt shown me anything yet (not much opportunity to), but neither has the other WRs really either. Those other WRs are also more clones of the WR we have and still leaves us in that need for a deep threat WR.

Chain I think 3 greater than signs were a bit of a stretch... ijs. LOL

But I do agree with you when it comes to how the DL is being built. I dont agree with utilizing a rotation of avg run stopping / pass rushing DLs vs finding a big body player that can clog holes as a dominant Run Stuffer. I know we are running a Hybrid 3-4, but it would be nice as a Defense that we can dictate that you cant run thru this gap or you at least need to commit two blockers to one player. It just make everything else easier for everyone. (Mehn I miss the Jamal Williams days...)

I want to be patient with the starting OL. I have seen units with multiple new pieces/positions take a little while to come together, so I am cautiously optimistic that the final result will be better than what we saw on Thursday night. The same is true for young Gordon, although I think I was particularly disappointed in what little he showed.

Clemens is better than what he showed on Thursday night as well. He has started a number of games over his career and has done okay. He has been a plus reserve QB. But I agree that there is a world of difference between Rivers and everything at QB not named Rivers.

Tourek Williams will be missed on special teams, but his injury is a blessing in disguise as far as the defense goes as Tourek was terrible almost all the time there. I always preferred Law to Williams and now he may get more PT. But OLB depth is definitely not a strength with either Law or Williams (which is why I was hoping that we would draft Dupree in addition to Emanuel).

I am tired of Novak's short kickoffs, so I really want us to keep Lambo assuming Lambo can kick 50%+ TBs. I would prefer to cut Novak altogether, but he is above average in FG accuracy, so I think keeping 3 kicking people is fine even though it is not ideal.

I think D. Brown must have naked pictures of our coaches/GM/owner. I can't justify his presence on our roster any other way. It just has to be some sort of blackmail.

I want Tyrell Williams to make it also, but he is buried on the depth chart and we aren't running any plays for him, which has me concerned. I agree that the other WRs are nothing special and that Williams is the guy with the potential.

I agree that it is night and day different when you have DL players that can occupy blockers, not get moved, and allow LBs to make plays. I couldn't emphasize enough that we are most effective when we play ball control and we can't play ball control effectively when the other team is running the ball down our throats and consuming the clock. That is, the failure to stop the run screws us on defense and it screws us on offense as well. I don't get why our coaches/GM do not seem to have a sense of urgency about that.

Agree. At this point though, I am past thinking that it is just not a sense of urgency for them. I just think its a difference in philosophy. Outside of Carrethers, no player brought in for that position has ever fit the build to be that presence in the middle. So we just have to hope that Carrethers emerges or their philosophy of rotating avg players somehow pans out.

As far as Gordon, I'm not worried about him. All it takes is some more reps and one big carry and he will be on his way. Week 1 we also only ran right (I guess to see how that right side could hold up in their new spots, but our left side should be our strongest side. Especially with those 2 mammoths on that side with a Fluker pulling from his spot.

TT has also done a decent job in my opinion. He makes mistakes, but tries to correct his wrongs so I have faith that Brown gets cut by week 3 of preseason.
