Chargers would like to keep Tolbert around
    By Kevin Acee

    K.C. Alfred
Chargers Mike Tolbert runs against the 49ers in the 2nd quarter on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.
The Chargers have begun the work to commit to a two-back system in the foreseeable future.

The team and running back Mike Tolbert have had talks about a long-term deal, and it is not out of the question one could be agreed to before the end of the league year.

According to people close to the situation, the Chargers have not made an offer. And Tolbert is just one of a handful of players with which the team has had preliminary talks.

Hopefully they won't keep Sproles a year too long.

He's gone after this year unless he agrees to a massive pay cut

I still think he is done. I wouldn't want him with a pay cut.

Regarding Sproles: I think we would be better served to spend that $7 elsewhere next year. We could get a younger, faster kick returner AND slot receiver for that money. He hasn't taken a return past the 40 in years. As Mathews gets better at picking up blitzers the last excuse for keeping Sproles in will be null and void. I wouldn't mind having Sproles on the roster, but not by overpaying him...and some other team (Washington, Oakland, Denver, etc) will offer him a wheelbarrow full of cash in the off-season.

Lock up Tolbert! He's a beast and he is fun to watch! Go "Yogi"!

And please remind him to strap his helmet on before he gets hurt!

It will be good to see Tolbert get some of Sproles money.

This is true. Put a helmet clause in his contract!

Sproles is still good in space on the dump offs and screens, but he has looked avg in the return game. There was a rookie that looked good in the preseason. Forget the name.

Sign Tolbert. Him and RM make a nice tandem.

When Goodman was healthy he shoulda been returning kicks. Instead we stuck with the same ol same ol human pinball who hardly ever beat the first guy. And he looked slow. Goodman runs like a bullet.

Jackson gets the Franchise tag next year so they have to pay or let him go and my gut feeling is they let him walk.

Tolbert's an RFA under even the stingiest of years of service criteria of any recent CBA the league has had or operated under in the past 25 years. At the absolute worst the guy will get a 2nd round tender (which to be honest should be enough to ward teams off since RB - unless you've got speed - doesn't have value that kicks in until the 2nd round, much like MLB).

I think he was talking about Sproles. Tolbert will most likely be back and I'd be surprised if VJ didn't get the FT (if it still exists).

Pay Tolbert (he deserves it) trade Sproles(gone past his prime/doesn't find the holes) start throwing Mathews flat patterns and outlets.

Tolbert reminds me not only of Natrone Means but also of Hank Bauer. Running and tackling without the helmet gave me flash backs of what Hank Bauer would do for us on Sundays.

Tender him a first and third or at least a first round tender because anything lower, the guy will be snatched up. Multi-year is even better.
