Looking back on the 2009 NFL season, Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable thinks he had a pretty good team. At least, at every position other than quarterback.

During his press conference on Monday, Cable was reflecting on how the 2009 season has gone. And when he was asked specifically about the lousy play of quarterback JaMarcus Russell -- and whether he thinks the Raiders would be a playoff team if they could have gotten average production out of their quarterback -- Cable said he thinks it's obvious that Russell was the one keeping the team out of the postseason.
"Without even asking that question, you know that we would have," Cable told the reporter who asked him if the Raiders would have been in the playoffs with an average or above-average quarterback.

Two questions arise in response to Cable's claim:

    1. Is he right that the Raiders would be in the playoffs with an average quarterback?
    2. Is it smart for a head coach to offer such pointed, public criticism of his quarterback?

I think the answer to the first question is probably no. The Raiders are 3-3 since Cable benched Russell, and although .500 is better than they were playing with Russell under center, it isn't good enough to make the playoffs. The Raiders have plenty of problems besides just Russell, including one of the league's worst defenses. An average quarterback wouldn't get them into the playoffs.

But I think the answer to the second question is yes -- it is smart of Cable to call Russell out. Russell completed just 47.8 percent of his passes this season, with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He's been nothing short of terrible. It's time for someone to hold him accountable, and it's good for the Raiders that the "someone" is the head coach.

Raiders owner Al Davis has coddled Russell since selecting him with the first pick in the 2007 NFL draft, and that coddling hasn't gotten him anywhere. It's time to get tough with Russell, and Cable's comments were a message that if they're both still in Oakland in 2010, Cable will demand that Russell start playing like a franchise quarterback.

I just love these humorous articles...

JaMarcus Russell is getting CUT. That's what it sounds like to me.

He's a $60 million bust. $32 mil guaranteed. Raiders have drop him and pick up the peices now.

Had they kept Garcia and let him start, they would have been better but still not post season. They might have made 8-8.

Well yeah, because he wanted to start... and he should have.
I would have let Garcia start with an agreement that he will also tutor Russell.

It's no different that letting Rivers ride the bench for the first two seasons.

Something they should have done in the very beginning... found a veteran FA quarterback, gave him the starting position, let Russell watch and learn.

It wouldn't have mattered. If you saw Russell play in college, you knew that he was dumber than a box of rocks! He couldn't read a defense to save his life. :icon_eek:

Normally it's too early to judge a QB this early in his career, even if he's this bad, but I don't think Russell has any kind of work ethic so I really don't see him putting in the time to make himself better(like Brees did).

Yeah Tom, let's lay it on Russell's shoulders. Al may just keep you around another year or so.

The organizations refusal to make him sit after multiple years worth of crappy prep, play and attitude is the bigger problem imo... Jamarcus was only out there b/c they let him.

That said, the Raiders are not as a whole a terrible bunch of talent, they're just not a very good "team". They could be dangerous if they ever got their **** together. Some legitimate consistency would go a long way for them.

Heh heh. And Cable is not a complete *** for throwing one of his players under the bus. What a disfunctional group of chumps.

That looks like a wise investment.

I am now 100% convinced that his NFL career will be over before his contract is.

Let the Raidurs be locked upon themselves.

As long as Al Davis makes lonesome decisions they'll be where they are.

But please remember our first game - with Gradkowski they could have won it - as aggressive as they were.

Jamarcus should staĆ½ as their francise QB . Fire Cable
