SAN DIEGO ---- LaDainian Tomlinson looks right, left and up the middle. Each direction at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's opening day shares a cluttered view of bodies, no creases for the dazzling back to slip through.

"Where do I go?'' Tomlinson asked.

Tomlinson was stuffed at the line, and luckily it didn't count. He overshot the clubhouse entrance, forcing one of his classic cutback maneuvers.

The Chargers' opening day beckons Monday night in Oakland, with Tomlinson again the thoroughbred among their stable. A Chargers postseason invitation likely rides on San Diego's most valuable pair of rested legs.

"I've been champing at the bit,'' Tomlinson said, "to get out and play.''

Tomlinson did like the school kids, taking the summer off. Not one exhibition season football found the six-year pro's midsection, which didn't upset coach Marty Schottenheimer's gut.

Tomlinson's head says it's go time, with an unpredictable trek beckoning.

"I've had a little experience of going on the journey,'' the three-time Pro Bowler said. "And it is always different.''

His first step comes with a bulging resume. It shows him rushing for at least 1,200 yards in each of his first five seasons, two shy of Eric Dickerson's NFL mark. Soon he will scamper past Lance Alworth, three short of his franchise touchdown mark of 83. That would give Tomlinson 14 Chargers records.

But Tomlinson tightens the Nikes bearing his name speaking of the team and not the tailback. Of not only him being special, but the 51 others, too.

Of a common bond that could extinguish Tomlinson's biggest thirst.
