Since Ray and I put down our top 3 best and top 3 worst QBs in Charger history, lets see what all of you think as well

    Top 3 Worst
    3. Babe Laufenberg - Weird name and didn't do much
    2. Craig Whelihan/John Friesz
    1. Ryan Leaf - can't be anyone else

    Top 3 Best
    3. Stan Humphries - led us to the superbowl but is #3 because he was on the team for so little
    2. Dan Fouts - owns the Charger record book and was an outstanding passer
    1. John Hadl - only charger QB to lead us to a championship

Edit - Next week it'll be the top 3 best/worst running backs in Charger history

Funny how QB's always get those bonus points for "leading us to a championship" but no one else.

Dan Fouts was the best QB in the history of this franchise. Anyone who thinks otherwise is insane. If winning a championship trumps everything else it means Big Ben, Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Jeff Hostetler, Phil Simms, Jim Plunkett, and Jim McMahon were all better QB's than Dan Fouts? If you were going to start the franchise from scratch and had all former Charger QB's too choose from in their primes, you'd choose Hadl over Fouts?

Crazy. Guess it was a good thing Hadl was so great because otherwise we might have only beaten the Boston Patriots by 20 points in the championship that year.

I definitely agree that Wheelihan and Leaf are on the list. The 3rd spot is debatable in my mind. Also solid choices on the top 3. I'm looking forward to next week's segment on the running backs.

Just to be contrary, I will say Humphries as the best. I have always liked him. Clearly the worst is #16. No question.

Last time I checked this was a team sport. QB doesn't win it alone. I can't ever see myself saying one QB is better than another just because he won a championship. That's like saying Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino because Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Does that really make sense?

Fouts, by far, is the best QB ever to wear a Charger uniform.

An AFL Championship, you saying he would have done that against the NFl Teams?

Tobin Rote quarterbacked us to an AFL title, but I don't think Hadl ever got us a league title. He is on my three best list, however.

I was reviewing some stats from the Chargers 1963 season and had to bring something up. While Hadl played in 1963, that team was really led by Tobin Rote. Or, at least he should get as much credit as Hadl for that one Championship season.

Here are both QB's stats for that year. link

Here is the scoring fromt he championship game. link

I'd love to see more detailed stats on that game and season if anyone can find that info. :icon_shrug:

I agree with those who say that lack of rings should not count against a QB, I'm thinking if Foust had the defense that Humphries had he would had done a lot better

    Best

    1. Foust
    2. Foust again just to prove a point
    3. Humphries

(Disclaimer : not old enough to have seen Hadl play)

    Worst
    1. Leaf
    2. Whelihan
    3. Malone

P.S. hope Rivers makes the list in a few years (Edit : the "Best" list)

Rote is the one that led the Chargers to a Championship. Hadl just came into the game after it was out of reach. Here's a link to more complete stats of that game (and game stats of all 1963 AFL games). pdf file ... scroll down to page 7 and 8.

If you can cut and paste the Champ game stats, or copy that and post it .... that would be much appreciated.
