Shawne Merriman is a rising star and the opposition knows it. What you don't know about Antonio Gates' foot. The pain will be there until the end of the year for one defender. A player heading to injured reserve? Another player to be more involved in the gameplan.

Shawne Merriman is up for Rookie of the Week honors again this week and the reviews around the league from the opposition have been glowing. Despite not starting until the month of October, his progress this year in such a short span has earned him recognition among the elite.

One of the best indications of Merriman's growing prowess is the respect other teams that are set to face the Chargers are giving the rookie linebacker.

"He is outstanding," said an NFL scout of a team the Chargers will face later this year. "He is a better rusher than anyone we will face this year."

There is talk among NFL circles that Merriman is now the frontrunner for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Antonio Gates received treatment Sunday night to reduce the swelling in his foot. But, he will be in a boot until Wednesday.

If his foot feels good, he will try and run. The All-Pro tight end must test the foot and if he is able to practice he will play.

Linebacker Steve Foley is still in tremendous pain with his abdominal injury and it looks like he is day-to-day the rest of the season. The most likely scenario is he misses practice most weeks – as several players did last year – and becomes a gameday decision.

The season might be coming to an end for tight end Ryan Krause. Out with a foot injury for most of the year, the team is leaning towards placing Krause on injured reserve.

Vincent Jackson had a minor setback with his hamstring injury but the plan is still to increase his playing time. He had been on special teams and saw action in the base offense. They want to continue to ease him into the offense, giving him opportunities in different situations.
