Norv Turner expanded only slightly on his plan for Sunday against the Washington Redskins, and none of it was really a surprise.
Turner told the team in a morning meeting, "We’re going to get ready to play this game" and any decisions about who plays or for how long will be made on Friday or Saturday.
But, rest assured, Turner already has some preliminary ideas.
"We've had some guys playing with injuries over the past month," Turner said today. "… Certainly, if there is someone we can help them by limiting how much they play or not playing them, that’s what we’re going to do. If there is someone who is limited because eof an injury we’ll take that into account ... We have to weigh all those different things, but we’re going to go play the game."
Turner said he doesn't view Sunday's game as "meaningless" even though the Chargers have already clinched the No.2 seed and a first-round playoff bye.
"There are things we can work on," he said. "There are little wrinkles we can work on that we don’t have to use in this game. Next week is a bye, and it's different than an in-season bye. To me, it’s a working bye."
The Chargers will practice as per usual next week -- Wednesday, Thursday and Friday -- before taking the weekend off.
His main goal is maintaining focus and remaining physically and mentally sharp while not playing a meaningful game for three weeks.
"It’ll be like game preparation," Turner said. "Because that is not only how you stay sharp but how you get better."
Turner said he expects Jacques Cesaire, out against Tennessee with an elbow injury, to return to practice. He also said Shaun Phillips, who injured his hip Friday. He also expects Eric Weddle (knee) and Steve Gregory (stinger) to practice. And he said Shawne Merriman, playing through tendinitis in his foot, came out of Friday's game well.
