Chargers projected roster (preseason Week 3)
By Kevin Acee and Michael Gehlken

Last week's injury to Vincent Brown prompts the Chargers to keep an extra wide receiver.
    That means a cut elsewhere.

As a checkpoint to chart roster movement, Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken and columnist Kevin Acee are updating the 53-man roster and depth chart throughout training camp and the preseason.

This fifth version, which comes at the halfway point of the exhibition schedule, features a tough cut in free safety and special teams ace Darrell Stuckey. A 2010 fourth-round pick in 2010, Stuckey's 12 special teams tackles last year were third most on the team.

He hasn't practiced or played a game since suffering a stinger Aug. 9 against the Packers.

Position battles — particularly those involving players who contribute on special teams — will continue to sway this depth chart over the next several weeks. Depth at offensive tackle and in the secondary remains in the balance.

The projected roster will be updated following every preseason game.

Teams are allotted a maximum of 90 players on their roster until Monday; they must drop to 75. On Aug. 31, they cut down to the final 53.

Not so certain that Goodman survives this time. Spurlock, Royal, Cason in a pinch can return kicks/punts. Willie could play himself into a role.

I was thinking the same thing, Mike Willie seems to be playing his way onto our regular season roster.

I haven't spent as much time watching the gunners on ST as I'd like (last night would have been a great time to start considering that the offense and defense weren't exactly giving me much to be enamored with analyzing), so I'll have to keep an eye on Willie in that respect in game 4. But anyone else got input into how he's performed in that respect?

Royal and Spurlock are both capable returners, and Brinkley, Cason, and Gilchrist all present reserve options. So if Goodman doesn't present something as a receiver, and another receiver shows more at his actual position while contributing as a gunner, I could see that guy getting the nod over RG. Also... isn't Troutwein PUP'd, so should he even be listed as a roster spot considering he's expected to miss the entire year?

Can’t wait till Thursday, hopefully seeing those bubble guys get a lot of chances and watching someone unexpected fight their way on to this team.

If the kicking competition is indeed a fait accompli in Nate’s favor, then I would like to see Novak released on Monday to give him a good chance to catch on with some other team. Heck, even if Kaeding is the one to go, I’d wish the same thing for him but I an quite convinced that both these guys will be kicking on an NFL roster this season.

Bird and Stuckey gone from the last prediction.
Frankly, I doubt AJ is going to let the coaches let Stuckey go. He's played well enough on STs to give AJ enough ammo in that fight.

This and Bair's prediction have only 4 CBs. Doesn't make a lot of sense: Jammer is dinged up, Wright is dinged up, Gilchrist is REALLY dinged up. Chargers will keep 5 CBs on 53 man.

If you have a dominant pass rush, who needs CBs? ;)

You need a couple bodies anyway. Unless we're implementing the 4-5 D this year....

Think he meant Troutman, the guy we picked in the 6th. He is IR'd for this year. Troutwein is one of the tackles we signed a week or two ago when Gaither wasnt coming back fast enough.

Looking at Ghelkin&Acee, Bair, and McLellan's predictions, there are 7 or 8 positions in question for the 53.

Safety: Does Stuckey make the team or not? All 3 of them think Lynch makes it, with the UT crew thinking that Stuckey makes it as well (ie 5 safeties)
CB: Do they go with 5 CBs or 4?
ILB: Do they keep Gach or let him go due to depth issues elsewhere?
DL: McLellan has the Bolts keeping Cesaire over Thomas . Not really a contest here, just thought I'd take the opportunity to point out that McLellan may have been high when he did his projections...
RG: McLellan also has the Bolts keeping Schilling instead of Davis.
TE: Bair is the lone holdout for Green making the team.
WR: Do they go Goodman or Parrish for the 6th WR?

Of course, none of those guys are known for their prognostication accuracy. That said, can't think of many other positions up for grabs on the 53. Plenty of them have battles for depth going on, but the top 47 spots or so seem pretty settled. A lot of what's left is going to depend on ST play I'd guess.

    My 53.

Lynch has had his shots in the NFL. I'll take Stuckey's development. Goodman can't catch for **** or run a route.

NC Times has the Chargers keeping Bront Bird, and exposing Green to waivers....stupid :poop:. They also have us keeping Goodman on the roster while VB is injured....I'd probably prefer Mike Willie as he has more natural talent as a WR.

Lynch has no business making any NFL roster.

Now that Rich is the asst. head coach, his input on players is probably bigger too. He'll want the best special teams players.

You don't spend a 4th rounder on a player and then just put him up for grabs unless something is seriously wrong with the guy. Green is still very green, but he's got obvious size and skills. Jackson didn't light the world on fire as a rookie either. It takes time to develop receivers (TEs included).

Green himself could be that 5th/6th WR on the roster too.

If Green isn't on this roster I will fly out to San Diego and punch Norv in his sagging turkey looking throat.

You do if you're willing to admit you were wrong.
    Take AJ for example...;)
