Baxter's a good pickup, and one I was actually hoping for in the actual draft. If he hadn't have had knee concerns he would have been drafted. He's a mean rock with a good anchor in the middle of the line, can play either guard position or center. Well coached too; Stoops' OL coaches aren't slouches.

Bird is a total under the radar guy that's going to be hit or miss, but there's definite upside. He's 6'4", 248 lbs (great size for a ILB), a HEAVY-hitter and former high school WR as well as OLB. His hands are good, he's actually pretty decent running with TE's and RB's, he's just not terribly fast in a straight line, and he needs to improve his ability to move with better agility while facing up to the offense. It's weird to describe in the limited tape I've seen on him; he does better running with his man in coverage than squaring up and closing forward on a guy who sits out of his route a couple of yards short when finding a hole in zone.

Kenney I've never heard of and I really don't have a ton of faith in Sooner receivers because they're not terribly well coached aside from being decent run-blockers. Ryan Broyles is one of the few OU receivers I've seen in a while whose stock wasn't boosted massively by the fact that the Sooners operate out of 4-wide a fair amount. Just sayin...

Even then, we'd have to bring in an experienced vet.

LOTS of guys with injuries their last year in college. This is a bad year to be an UDFA, and this crop isn't very exciting.
You'd think there would be some room at SILB. Acee reported that the Bolts won't pay Siler starting $$$, but that they're also cutting Cooper.

So I guess we're trading for or acquiring a veteran.

Or AJ's so confident in his draft acumen that he's already penciled in Butler. Or..hehehe...Mouton.

I hear ya. This year's UDFA class sucks too. The fullback DiMarco from South Carolina could be interesting though...

Yep, apparently they're going to make a strong play for him.

21 at SS, Jammer at FS, and Asomugha/Cason on the corners?

He has to if he's going to jettison Cooper and Siler. That leaves us with...no one.

Weak arm = camp fodder. Maybe a #3, but all a #3 needs are: smarts and a strong arm (jesus-like hair and beard are optional). So when you're batting .500 right off the bat, I don't think you've got a good chance. Which makes the wasted pick on whatshisname last year all the more puzzling...

Not many teams will keep a 3rd QB due to the new rule. Most likely there will be 2 and one on the practice squad.

Hows Nick Barnett and Takeo Spikes sound?

I saw Barnett wont be retained by GB and he is intersted in SD. I like it. Hearsay on Spikes.

Chargers reach agreement with 19 college FAs

    By Christopher Smith, Chargers.com
    Posted 43 minutes ago
a a San Diego adds a quarterback and five receivers from the 2011 class of undrafted college players.
SAN DIEGO – The Chargers agreed to terms with 19 undrafted free agents Tuesday in the first player transactions made by San Diego since the April draft.

Among those signed are a player from each of the teams in the BCS National Championship game, five wide receivers and a quarterback.

Auburn defensive end Mike Blanc and Oregon offensive tackle Bo Thran find themselves teammates six months after facing each other in college football national title matchup.

San Diego now has two quarterbacks under contract, Rivers and Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien.

Tolzien started two seasons for the Badgers and completed 72.9 percent of his passes as a senior in a run-oriented offense. In 2010, Tolzien completed 14-of-15 passes at Michigan and 13-of-16 in a win against No. 1-ranked Ohio State, leading the Badgers to a share of the Big Ten championship and a spot in the Rose Bowl. Tolzien also attended the NFL Combine.

The five receivers include Adrian Cannon (Maryland), Vidal Hazelton (Cincinnati), Cameron Kenney (Oklahoma), Travon Patterson (Colorado) and Giovanni Stanley (Whittier).

The Chargers have some uncertainty at receiver. San Diego has used the franchise tag on Vincent Jackson, who isn’t allowed to sign until Friday. Patrick Crayton and Seyi Ajirotutu are the only other receivers under contract, and third-round pick Vincent Brown remains unsigned.

Richard Goodman and Ajirotutu both played for the Chargers last season after beginning the year as undrafted free agents. Linebacker Brandon Lang also made the roster in 2010 without being drafted.

    • Arizona center Colin Baxter provides depth behind Nick Hardwick, who was the only center under contract entering Tuesday.

    • Jacob Hester, who spent last season as the team’s only fullback, has some company. The Chargers signed Frank Summers, a member of Pittsburgh’s practice squad in 2010, earlier this year, and added Patrick Dimarco of South Carolina on Tuesday.

    • Minnesota-Duluth running back Isaac Odim, a three-time Division II All-American, ran a reported 4.63-second 40-yard dash and posted a 38.5-inch vertical leap in a workout with NFL scouts.

    • By conference, the Chargers signed five from the Big 12, four from the SEC, three from the Pac-10, two from the Big East and one from the ACC, Mountain West and Big Ten. Odim (Division II) and Giovanni (Division III) represent the small schools. Giovanni (Whittier College) is the only player of the 19 that attended college in California, though Kenney and Patterson began their careers at USC, where they were teammates of third-round draft choice and cornerback Shareece Wright.

    • TCU defensive tackle Kelly Griffin, the largest, is listed as 6-foot-1, 310 pounds on the Horned Frogs’ website. He broke his ankle in October and did not play in TCU’s Rose Bowl win.

    Name Position School
    Colin Baxter C Arizona
    Bront Bird LB Texas Tech
    Mike Blanc DE Auburn
    Ramon Broadway CB Arkansas
    Adrian Cannon WR Maryland
    Patrick Dimarco FB South Carolina
    Darryl Gamble LB Georgia
    Kelly Griffin DT TCU
    Cody Habben OT Washington
    Stephen Harrison CB Kansas State
    Vidal Hazelton WR Cincinnati
    Cameron Kenney WR Oklahoma
    Isaac Odim RB Minnesota-Duluth
    Travon Patterson WR Colorado
    Damik Scafe DE Boston College
    Giovanni Stanley WR Whittier
    Brad Taylor TE Baylor
    Bo Thran OT Oregon
    Scott Tolzien QB Wisconsin

That was a nice stop on Blount. Course it was an obvious play call being 3rd and goal and up 14 to 0. But great anticipation and staying home not giving away where he was gonna end the play at.

I wrote that before we signed Spikes and was talking SOLB, so it doesn't include Burnett.

Butler and Mouton have yet to play a down in the NFL. Not exactly players to hang your hat on. Also, Mouton looks like a WILB to me, but we'll see (hopefully if he amounts to anything).
