The Chargers uniforms will be significantly different when they take the field against Chicago Bears on September 9th. The uniform has changed several times since their inception in 1960. Twenty one times the Chargers have fielded modified uniforms before not counting the adjustments to the ‘Throwback’ uniforms which were first worn in 1994.

The latest new uniform has met with differing reviews. Some fans love them, others can take them or leave them, and a few really dislike them. The main change that fans notice on the jersey is that the new yellow lightning bolt with the dual blue outlines now stretches around the shoulder as opposed to over the top of it as it has in the past. Also now the number of points will be the same from jersey to jersey. In the past the number of points on the shoulder changed dependant upon the size of the player.

The Navy Jerseys are coupled with white pants, with a navy stripe down the side with the lighting bolt on it. The white jerseys have navy pants with a white stripe with the bolt on it. This change represents the first major change to the Chargers uniform in the last 18 years.

One reason for the Change was to give the new team it’s own identity according to Jim Steeg: "The team has had many different looks in its 47-year history," said Steeg, the team's chief operating officer. "We believe it's time for this team and this group of players to have its own identity."

LaDanian Tomlinson feels they are an improvement as well “I think it's really great," Tomlinson said. "If you look at the history of the Chargers, going back to when Lance Alworth was playing in the powder blues; (Dan) Fouts and the uniforms they had and then you go to the era of Stan Humphries and Junior Seau ... all of those guys had their identity ...their kind of uniform that made it unique for their teams.

"Well, I think it is time for us to have our identity, with our jerseys. This is our era. We've got great guys on this team and this is going to be the San Diego Chargers for years to come. So I think it is only right to have our own new jerseys and create our own era and our own identity."

“It's sweet,” safety Marlon McCree said. “It's always good to have something new. No one in the league will have anything like it.”

Change in uniform can lead to a change in performance?:
It is difficult to explain why, but teams have played differently when they have a new uniform. Often times improving their teams fortunes when the change occurs. However this could be due to new GMs, Owners, or infusion of new talent. But I think the the emotional boost cannot be disregarded.

1990 the Atlanta Falcons switched to their all black uniforms, and improved their win/loss record from the previous year.

In 1993 changes to the Patriots' uniforms and logo were rolled out by brief Patriots owner James B. Orthwein. The old "Pat Patriot" logo was retired and replaced with a stylized Patriot head in silhouette wearing a red-white-and-blue tricorn hat, designed in tandem with NFL Properties that fans and sports officials would eventually nickname the "Flying Elvis".The team's uniforms were changed from red to "Patriot" (dark) blue, and both the helmets and pants from white to silver. That year they improved their win/loss total from the year before.

In 1994 San Francisco switched to their throwback uniforms full time, they won the Superbowl that year.

In 1996 The Buccaneers jettisoned the old "creamsicle" uniforms, the following season they made the playoff for the first time in

1997 The Greenbay Packers changed their uniforms Team for first time since 1958 changing to only three stripes on sleeve (shifting down from five stripes); NFL shield added to lower left thigh. That year they went to the Superbowl beating the New England Patriots. The Packers first return trip to the big dance since Superbowl II.

Also in 1997 the Denver Broncos changed from the old ‘orange crush’ uniforms to their new blue uniforms. The following year they won the Superbowl.

In 2000 the St. Louis Rams went to the Superbowl beating Tennessee. In 2000 they changed to their current gold and blue uniform. They had not been to the Superbowl since 1980 previously.

    An error in the unveiling?
    According to sportsbybrooks.com:
    Bigger is better:
Many people have said that the new uniforms make the player look bigger. The Chargers have said that this is intentional. I do admit that looking at the pictures of LT and Merriman in the uniforms from the fashion show, they do indeed make them look bigger in the upper torso.

In the same way that a superhero looks bigger in his suit the Chargers look bigger in the new uniforms. Compare a picture from last season to one from this season and I think you will see a difference. The bolt on the shoulders is one of the big reasons for the change. When I fist saw the new uni’s I did not like the bolts rolling across the shoulders, but now I am sold on them.

    Squeaky clean:
I have always been a fan of the white helmets. I loved the big black numbers on the sides of the throwback helmets, thought they were great. At first I was a bit miffed that the new white helmets did not have the side numbers. But after seeing them in action, they just look so clean as is. The redesigned bolt on the new metallic-white helmet is nice. A change from the dull white helmets the throwback uniforms sproted.

    Closing question:
So I have stated I am sold on them. I love the new uniforms, they get me pumped up for the up coming season, but what about you. Do you like them, have they grown on you, or are you still cringing every time you see them?

    What is your opinion?

I love the new helmets and I really like the placement of the number over the bolt on the shoulder. I had hoped for more of the collegiate blue, but I'll take what I can get of it.

My wife says she likes the new "outfits." I promptly explained to her that they were uniforms...

You can't just say, "I was wrong, the new uniforms look snazzy?"

Are you sure you're not the same guy who writes the legal disclaimers for forum memberships? :D

The aways look better than the homes or powders, IMO. Maybe that's best as it always really rubs it in when you beat a team down in their house.

Personally - I don't care if they wear sumo outfits, as long as they win & DOMINATE!!!!!

Hey TS, is there any truth to the rumor mentioned in the post that the new logo and jersey were posted for a short time by accident. That is what lead to their unveiling when it happened?

Yeah that's absolutely true. Joel was testing out a couple images for the eventual unveiling and somehow the header posted to the official site. It was only up for like three minutes but that was long enough for someone to do a cut-and-paste. Joel was... well, let's just say panic-mode probably describes it pretty well.

Damn. That is kinda funny and sad at the same time. I hate those panic mode times (that would be the sad part). They look killer though...

Join the club. I don't look like Steve Reeves anymore either. I like the aggressive look the new Unis have. They have an immediate visual impact on the field. Can't wait to see the powder blues.

i really like the jerseys... my only beef is with the pants. the bolt on the side of the pants looks kind of ridiculous in my opinion. it's so damn long and wispy. :/

Rams won the superbowl BEFORE they changed to the navy/gold. They wore those old blue/yellow unis when they won w/ Warner.

So you've finally decided to stop crying about the new uniforms huh Conc? Also, are you capable of making a new topic that isn't 47 paragraphs long?

    Once again, TL/DR.
