    Vikings Fire Brad Childress

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 22, 2010, 12:13 PM EST
Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress has been fired.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is first reported, and the Vikings have confirmed, that Childress has been fired.

This morning the Vikings announced that Childress would meet the press for his regularly scheduled weekly press conference, which some assumed meant he was safe for at least another week.

But that assumption was incorrect: Childress is out.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has been named the interim head coach for the rest of the 2010 season. Frazier and Vikings owner Zygi Wilf will address the media this afternoon.

Fire Farve while you're at it Vikings. Dude is like WAY done. He should have retired like 3 seasons ago anyway and keep doing commercials for Wrangler. It's just amazing how this team went from the NFC Championship to this. Oh how things change so quickly in the NFL (Not For Long)

They need to put in Tarvaris Jackson for the rest of the season. The dude has been screwed over by the Favre thing. Vikes should have been developing him or finding out if he is their QB of the future.

So how does the Rooney rule apply in this scenario? Can they just promote Frazier without having to do interviews?

interim coach is probably an exception.

I'm a little bummed. Leslie Frazier is supposed to be a hot item for a HC job. Could we get him and keep RR has DC?

There was some sarcasm there with my Rooney rule comment.

IRVING – If the Cowboys want to remove the interim tag from Jason Garrett's head coaching title in 2011, they will have to satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule requirements.

The Rooney Rule mandates a team must interview minority candidates for head coaching and front-office positions.

The league has language in place that covers a team making an in-season coaching move, which the Cowboys did Monday.

According to a release from the NFL, "the club must follow the mandatory interviewing process in choosing a new permanent head coach, unless the club had concluded a prior contractual agreement with a member of its coaching staff to become the club's head coach and this contractual agreement had been filed with the League Office at the time it was signed."

Garrett does not have such a provision in the contract he signed when he joined the team in 2007. He had the title of assistant head coach added in 2008.

In 2003, the NFL ruled Jones' telephone conversation with Dennis Green satisfied Rooney Rule standards after the team had a deal in place with Bill Parcells. In 2007, Jones interviewed minority candidates Todd Bowles, Jim Caldwell, Ron Rivera and Mike Singletary.

Man, I bet there are no end of applications for the Vikings job!

    Huge offensive line...top 5 running back...decent wide receivers...solid defence

All they need is a quarterback and this team can go places!!

Sad to see a coach loose a job due to pressure of the 'Let's get old man favre his starts'.
Who thought favre could repeat last years numbers? That season was out of character for his performances of the late 3 years. Could have retired on a high note when he left the packers but nooo...Anywho, I'm glad he's burnt toast. Too many great players have not got the endorsments or the playing time.
