We have some seriously hard decisions after this year...and the next couple of years. Look at the number of players who have contracts due after this year:

    Through 2010:
OLB Shawne Merriman - This is a "maybe"..depending largely on how he performs this year. If is dominant once again...Some of VJ and McNeill's contract money may go to him.
ILB Stephen Cooper- Many don't like him...but he has captained our defense for a while and isn't that easy to replace as some would like to believe. His price tag would also be moderate.
S Eric Weddle- I'm not a huge fan of his...but he is clearly in the long-term plans for this franchise. I do like that he committed to getting into shape this offseason for once and lost the "pillsbury doughboy" label for softest body on the team.
RT Jeromey Clary- Another guy who will be examined closely this year. Could retain his starting RT position...or at least be a valued reserve.
LB Brandon Siler - Has made a name for himself. May be the most important player on the defense in short yardage situations as a hammer to stop the run.
    DE Jacques Cesaire
WR Malcolm Floyd- Mark my words. Philip is going to make this guy a star this year and he is going to get a big contract. He showed up like a good soldier and will get rewarded for it.
DE Travis Johnson- Unsure about him. We have a lot of DLinemen
RB Darren Sproles- Depends on his contract demands and what role he wants. I suspect he still wants starting RB money and to play every down. Won't be doing that with us.
ILB Kevin Burnett - It is always valuable to have a LB who is a specialist in passing situations. When healthy can be an impact player. If he stays healthy this year, I think we move to retain him.
WR Craig Davis- Huge year for him. If he shows up when the games count and has a break out year, he could be re-signed. If he does nothing as per usual, he's gone for sure. I'll believe it when I see it from him.
C-G Scott Mruczkowski- With Greene seeing more time at OT, he's going to be a valued reserve inside.
DE Ryon Bingham- Probably gone this year.
WR Legedu Naanee - Starting WR and will be looking to be compensated like one after this year. I bet that PR makes him some money this year too.
FB Mike Tolbert - this is a sure bet. versatile and important as a RB/FB and ST. Keeper.
QB Billy Volek- Maybe time for him to go after what we've seen this year.
FS Paul Oliver - Growing every year. He may be what we were hoping for with Stuckey.
OLB Antwan Applewhite- I'm sold. The dude makes plays and is a valuable insurance policy at OLB. Great STer also.
WT Josh Reed- On the verge of being cut this pre-season.

    Through 2011:
C Nick Hardwick - Not his biggest fan, but starting centers don't grow on trees.
P Mike Scifres- see the 2008 playoffs against the Colts if you don't think a good punter matters.
FB Jacob Hester- See Tolbert. Very valuable to this team on ST.
    CB Nathan Vasher- No.
CB Donald Stickland- Too early to tell...Looks like he might be a keeper though as a nickel corner. Great tackler / blitzer. We don't have enough of those guys.
LT Brandyn Dombrowski- He can make himself a lot of money if he steps up and does well this year in place of McNeill.

I have bolded the players that I believe we will be for sure looking at locking in long-term. Some, like Malcolm Floyd...may be considered "star" players after this year and will be looking for a monster contract. If we do indeed end up trading or otherwise letting VJ, McNeill or both go after this year...it will give some flexibility to try to sign some of these guys long-term. Shawne Merriman is also a bit of a wild card. If he regains his old form this year and becomes a pass rushing terror we desperately need....he may be back in the long-term picture for this team...especially if we have some available cash from the other departures.
