Assuming Marcus misses Week 1, the single biggest one-on-one match-up that will determine the game will be Julius Peppers vs. LJ Shelton.

I think what the Chargers will do is keep Brandon on the left side to help out with a lot of blocking. If Peppers is getting lots of pressure, Turner will start calling a lot of quick slants and screens to neutralize the rush and get the ball out fast.

I believe that Peppers will get sacks, but I don't see him taking over the game the way Haynesworth and Vanden Bosch did last year @TEN.

    Thoughts?

Shelton will definitely have TE help and they will run plays and screens to neutralize him. When Rivers drops back in coverage, Manu and L.J. and or Tolbert will help out. Can't forget the other guys though. Carolina will be a handful and has a great D and some real good players on offense. Should be a low scoring affair like 24-13 (us of course) kind of similiar to the Bears game last year except DelHomme is so much better than Interceptionasaurous Rex was for Da Bears. Gonna be fun!

They don't match up on paper

    Defense

LDE: Tyler Brayton** Never established a niche in Oakland, which is partly why he never established much of a stat line either. Not someone you want starting.

DT: Ma’ake Kemoeatu A good space filler more than anything.

DT: Damione Lewis A pass-rushing specialist, though improvements in recent years justify his promotion to starter. Still, he’s nowhere near the player Kris Jenkins was.

RDE: Julius Peppers Coming off a flat-out awful season. The hope is that a move back to the right side–his college position–will ignite him. It could. And so could his expiring contract.

SLB: Thomas Davis Not in the highest stable of linebackers, but a fearsome playmaker who can be a force in a variety of ways.

MLB: Jon Beason Will be the best inside linebacker in football before Winter Solstice.

WLB: Landon Johnson** Versatile veteran who can really thrive in an ancillary role. Agility and adeptness in coverage are a plus.

CB: Chris Gamble Doesn’t flash amazing speed or quickness–he just plays football extremely well. Receivers have a hard time shaking him.

SS: Chris Harris Solid presence–especially if he forces eight fumbles again this year.

FS: Charles Godfrey* Third-round pick who played CB at Iowa. Panthers are smitten over him.

CB: Ken Lucas Good player but highly unlikely that he’ll be able to keep his job from fast-rising Richard Marshall.

    —————

DL: Charles Johnson Has a chance to start, thanks to the dearth of talent at DE. Was only active for two games last season despite being a third-round pick.

LB: Dan Connor* Good player. But not as good Jon Beason. And probably not as good as Thomas Davis. Why exactly did Carolina pick him?

NB: Richard Marshall Crawling with talent; corrects his weaknesses on almost a weekly basis. He can be one of the really good ones.

    Key Players Acquired

    DL Tyler Brayton (Oak)

    OL Milford Brown (Stl)

    G Toniu Fonoti (FA)

    WR D.J. Hackett (Sea)

    S Terrence Holt (Ari)

    LB Landon Johnson (Cin)

    WR Muhsin Muhammad (Chi)

    DT Ian Scott (Phi)

    RB LaBrandon Toefield (Jax)

    G Keydrick Vincent (Ari)

    DT Darwin Walker (Chi)

    Key Players Lost

    QB David Carr (NYG)

    WR Drew Carter (Oak)

    WR Keary Colbert (Den)

    RB DeShaun Foster (SF)

    C Justin Hartwig (Pit)

    DT Kris Jenkins (NYJ)

    S Marquand Manuel (Den)

    DT Kindal Moorehead (Atl)

    LB Dan Morgan (NO, retired)

    DE Mike Rucker (retired)

    QB Vinny Testaverde (retired)

    G Mike Wahle (Sea)

It’s always unsettling to see a team with this much roster turnover. Carr was a disaster. Carter and Colbert both underachieved; Muhammad and Hackett are huge upgrades. Foster would have counted nearly $5 million against the cap, which he simply wasn’t worth. They traded Jenkins for mid-round picks. His negative attitude had grown old, but the Panthers will soon realize that he was their most valuable D-lineman. Rucker retired at the right time. So did Testaverde and Morgan. John Fox wasn’t happy with Wahle’s ‘07 performance, and the hope is that the bigger Vincent will make the rushing attack more powerful. If he doesn’t then they’ll try Brown or Fonoti. Walker and Scott have both recently been with the Eagles and Bears, though not together. Carolina should be happy if one of them works out. Johnson was a good addition, especially for $10 million over three years.

You can call it that...i mean i'm certainly in that mode. You have a top 5 DE vs a backup. Not usually optimistic about that

There are much better matchups this weekend. e're favored by ten points. Only the Patriots have a better spread. WE will win this one...not by much but nonetheless. Well, I'm pissed! I just found out the cowboys-Browns game will air in SF instead. What? I guess fags like cowboys.

JL... all of the reports on 'Pepp' is that he's 100%...bringing the heat... and every bit the player that he used to be. If this is true, we're in for a long day watching Shelton try to neutralize him. Norv had better be prepping for peppers or I'll be shiittin' bricks on sunday.

I think Peppers will cause problems just by the fact that the Chargers must game plan for him. Our line is looking pretty cobbled together right now and additional wrinkles in the blocking scheme could be magnified by the lines' inexperience as a unit.

I expect pressure on Rivers for much of the game from more than just Peppers.

I think that is a little harsh. With McNeil out the left side of our line becomes a interesting problem against the likes of Peppers. Folks should be able to discuss the issue without being flamed and laughed at.

And if I had to choose between the "Woe is me" crowd and the "Pom Pom" crowd I would pick the former. At least the "Woe is me" crowd tries to engage others in debate.

BFISA, you're not part of the Pom Pom Crowd are you?

BFISA and I are the pom pom crowd. You guys need to stop doubting and start believing.
This is our year and I'll be damned if the Panthers think they're gonna make it a slow start. It'll be close but there is no doubt in my mind we'll win. So Peppers gets sacks, hurries, a few tackles for a loss. The W is all that matters.

    More power to you.

And you just contributed a little to the conversation by discussing what will happen in the game as opposed to the following three posts,

that just flame people for wanting to talk about football. That's all.

EDIT: BTW... I think they'll win too. I just want to understand how they did it despite obvious deficiencies.

Watch the first 30 seconds to see why you're going to need to double and triple team Peppers all day.

The rest of it ain't bad either ;)

Honestly, anybody who thinks we're actually a 9 point underdog hasn't been paying attention to the offseason.

I know, really! I mean, I don't know wtf all the media keeps talking about how the Patriots are going to do so well this year, they must not have been watching the Patriots lose all of their preseason games!!:icon_rofl:

I could show you a video of LT owning up the Lions so bad that after halftime when he had already racked up over 100 yards we put in our THIRD string (at the time) running back, who also got over 100 yards. Does that prove anything? It just proves that the Lions suck. Just like Washington. So Peppers pushed over a weak left tackle. Good Job!

When Rivers is collecting pieces of his exploded spleen, don't say I didn't warn you.
