Massive crackback block that I'm sure we've all seen already,
but damn, Tate knocked Lee on his taint.

Yep. And Tate was fined big time for that hit:

All I saw wrong was leading with the Helmet, which is still the most popular choice for tacklers anyway.

Watching the tape, not sure how you can say he led with his helmeIt looked like forearm and shoulder. The helmet was there but did not make significant contact.

I tend to agree with this assessment.
It was what John Madden called a "slobber-knocker" mainly
because Lee was not aware of his surroundings. As a linebacker,
or any football player, your head should always be on a swivel.
He (Lee) paid no attention to any other player besides the quarterback
running with the ball. Big mistake.
I think maybe that the reason the fine was so high is because of
Tate's mild celebration after the play that could be seen as "taunting".

I think it was so high because Jerry Jones called for a fine so the league issued a fine.

Fine was high b/c the player he hit was defenseless.

Not a crack back at all. He hit him above the waist and from the front. Lee just wasn't watching. I honestly didn't see any helmet to helmet contact, but really that's the only thing the league could penalize him on, or the celebration afterwards. Unless I'm mistaken, the defenseless player rule only applies to receivers. It was just a gnarly hit, and I doubt Lee ever makes that mistake again.
