I'm starting this thread early because this team doesn't deserve the respect today of someone starting it post game.

Balls - Melvin Ingram: Quietly played a solid game, got some pressure, made some tackles, did well in coverage. Didn't record a sack but got close a couple times.

Birds - Philip Rivers: Pretty much panicked and lost this game for us.
Defense - Horrendous on 3rd downs, it was 2011 all over again today.
Mathews - Fumbling inside the 5 yard line ruined what was actually a pretty good day for him.
    Floyd - Dropped multiple passes.
    Gates - Dropped multiple passes.
Scifres - For the worst punt of his entire career.
Norv - For not making any adjustments when the Falcons were bringing the house. No slants, drags, outs, hitches, digs, even when Philip was standing in his own endzone. He did not help Rivers today.

I don't think its come to that, but this was a circa 2011, 2010 peformance today against our first real test of the season.

Best thing is Den and Oak lose and AFC W standings stay with SD on top. And gotta love that it wasnt a AFL team and wont come into consideration for tie breakers.

Yeah but this is a confidence hit for us, we don't even belong on the same field as the Falcons.

I didn't get to see the game. Was Mathews bad? He fumbled?

    Balls:
    Non-3rd down defense.
    Ingram

    Birds:
    3rd down defense
    Mathews' ball security
    Floyd and Gates' ball-catching skills
    interior line pass-blocking.

The Chargers gave it up more than virgins on prom night. This was not a good game for us, and the badness started when Mathews coughed the ball up after we'd driven the ball 85 yards down the field.

The fumble taints everyones view of the game, but the truth is Ryan Mathews looked like a beast just about every time he touched the ball. He has speed to the corner, he lowered his head and plowed people, he broke multiple arm tackles, and I don't think I ever saw the first player that hit him actually bring him down.

I was pumped about his play, right up until he fumbled. He deserves the boo birds coming down on him tonight for costing us a huge momentum shift in the game, but I can't wait to see him come back next week and put 100 on the Chiefs.

Point is I'm not worried about Mathews, I'm pretty confident he'd have broken 100 yards today if Norv hadn't bailed on the run game at halftime. It was working, and it was taking pressure off of Rivers, and once again Norv jumped ship too early and the Falcons blitzed like hell.

We should have run Battle more as well, to wear down that ATL defense that was barely on the field at all.

I'm going to give a ball to Torrey Smith even though he has nothing to do with this game. He came and caught two TDs for the Ravens and had an amazing game after losing his brother not even 24 hours ago.

I know, I sat him today for Reggie Wayne.:( I didn't think he'd play.

But always good for 4 or 5 points. I figured I'd better not risk playing Smith in the late game considering it was too late to pick someone up off waivers.

Thanks. I feel that this kid has a heart of a lion. It's just a matter of time when he will prove himself. He has had a couple of fumbling plays that cost his team. I think he gets it and understands what the cost is. He, in my mind wants to prove us all that he can be great and he sure does seem to have the drive and will.

We got beat by a great team, we will continue to get beat by great teams if we continue to do the same old things. Norv is too predictable, our defensive scheme was too predictable. Roddy White even said, all the plays they practiced for all week went exactly how they wanted because they knew what Norv and Chuck would do before the Chargers did.

Norv kept saying the reason we lost was because we have a lot of new players on the team. Most of the terrible plays I saw were from the vets. As long as he keeps believing that was the reason, we will continue to see 8-8's and just missing the playoffs again
