Colts rule out Donald Brown, Pierre Garcon

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 2, 2010 7:18 PM ET
Colts wideouts Austin Collie and Blair White should get plenty of targets again this week.

Paul Kuharsky of ESPN's AFC South blog reports the Colts ruled out starting wideout Pierre Garcon and running back Donald Brown on Saturday after both players didn't fly with the team to Jacksonville.

Collie, running back Joseph Addai, linebacker Clint Session, and tackle Charlie Johnson are all listed as questionable, but made the trip. Look for them all to play.

If Addai was out, the team would only have Mike Hart and Devin Moore available at running back. We can't imagine they'd be comfortable with that setup.

Collie could have a BIG day.

Patriots rule Fred Taylor out for Monday night at Miami

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 2, 2010 3:31 PM ET
The Patriots will be short at running back on Monday night in Miami.

New England has downgraded Fred Taylor to out for the game against the Dolphins.

Taylor has played in all three games this year and picked up 98 yards on 25 carries, but he missed practice this week with a toe injury.

In Taylor's absence BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who leads the Patriots this season with 31 carries for 139 yards, will probably get even more work. Sammy Morris and Danny Woodhead are also likely to get carries, and the recently signed Thomas Clayton is expected to be active as well.

Don't start a NE RB unless you have to. BenJarvus would be the one to start.

Texans | Arian Foster off to hot start
    Sun, 03 Oct 2010 07:10:35 -0700

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster has 406 yards rushing and three touchdowns through three games. He also has eight receptions for 96 yards and leads the NFL with 502 scrimmage yards. If he can rush for at least 94 yards and catch at least four yards worth of passes in Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders, he will become the third back in NFL history to total more than 500 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the first four games of the season.

Rams RB Jackson a game-day decision

If Steven Jackson is unable to play Sunday against the Seahawks, Kenneth Darby would likely be in line to get the start at running back for the Rams in Week 4.

Could be an interesting play if you are in need of a RB.

A look ahead.... Did you pick up Holmes yet??

Santonio returns to the Jets tomorrow morning

Posted by Mike Florio on October 3, 2010 10:15 AM ET
It's Week Four. And with most folks bracing for the Monday return of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to the Steelers, the return of the guy who caught the most important pass Roethlisberger ever has thrown largely has been forgotten.

Receiver Santonio Holmes' four-game suspension ends today. We're told that he'll be back with the team on Monday morning, and that he's expected to play when the Jets host the Vikings on Monday, October 11.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Holmes has been training hard and he's "ready to go."

And that could be great news for the 2-1 Jets. Holmes followed his toe-tapping Super Bowl XLIII MVP performance with 1,248 receiving yards (a 15.8 yards per catch average) in 2009.

But Jets fans should continue to be cautiously optimistic, at best. The fact that the league suspended Holmes four games for violating the substance-abuse policy means that he previously had violated the policy multiple times, and that a fine in the amount of four game checks wasn't sufficient to get him on the right track before facing a four-game suspension without pay.

Now, he remains subject to ongoing, unannounced testing. One false move will trigger a one-year suspension.

Until that should happen, the Jets will have a potent weapon for an offense that has improved dramatically since Week One.

Football weather is back in Pittsburgh

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 3, 2010 8:53 AM ET
It's only fitting that football weather makes a return for the first time this year in what should prove to be the nastiest game of the day.

The temperature at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh should be around 52 degrees at kickoff. Light rain is falling right now, and there is a 40-percent chance of precipitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.

That could make for a messy field and a lot of carries for running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Ray Rice. Messy suits the Steelers and the Ravens just fine.

This could be a game of field goals.

Steven Jackson in starting lineup versus Seahawks

Posted by Evan Silva on October 3, 2010 11:50 AM ET
Steven Jackson will play through his groin injury Sunday against the Seahawks. Jackson is officially active for the game.

Perhaps just as notably, Jackson is in the starting lineup. So Kenneth Darby will come off the bench.

    Julius Jones among Seahawks' inactives

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 3, 2010 12:11 PM ET
Seattle Seahawks running back Julius Jones won't play today against the Rams.

Jones wasn't listed on this week's injury report, and all indications are that it's just Seahawks coach Pete Carroll's preference to have Justin Forsett as the team's featured running back.

Pierre Thomas inactive for Saints vs. Panthers

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 3, 2010 11:59 AM ET
The New Orleans Saints are increasingly shorthanded at running back.

Pierre Thomas is inactive today against the Panthers. He had been listed as questionable with an ankle injury. With Reggie Bush already out with a broken fibula, the Saints are down their top two running backs.

The Saints can now turn to Chris Ivory, Ladell Betts or Deshawn Wynn at running back.

Jahvid Best active against the Packers

Posted by Evan Silva on October 3, 2010 11:39 AM ET
Lions running back Jahvid Best has been dealing with turf toe since Week Three, but practiced on Friday and is officially active for Sunday's game against Green Bay.

The Packers led the NFL in run defense last season, though they've been a little more generous to opposing running backs in the early going this year.

Ray Rice is active Sunday at Pittsburgh

Posted by Evan Silva on October 3, 2010 11:35 AM ET
Despite being listed as questionable on the Week Four injury report, Ravens running back Ray Rice was never in serious danger of missing Sunday's game at Pittsburgh.

And, as expected, Rice is active for the matchup.

Rice was one of few NFL backs to have success against the Steelers in 2009. Dick LeBeau's defense has held Michael Turner and Chris Johnson in check so far this year.

Willis McGahee will remain the No. 2 back and favorite for goal-line carries Sunday.

Lions | Kevin Smith to see first action of season
    Sun, 03 Oct 2010 08:58:12 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (knee) is active for the team's Week 4 game against the Green Bay Packers, reports DetroitLions.com. This will be Smith's first regular season action of the 2010 season. Head coach Jim Schwartz said he believes Smith not playing during the first three weeks allowed him more time to rest his surgically repaired knee.

Keep an eye on him if Best continues to nurse the toe injury.

    Andre Johnson out for Texans

Posted by Mike Florio on October 3, 2010 2:33 PM ET
The Houston Texans will try to beat the Raiders today without one of their best offensive weapons.

Andre Johnson's sprained ankle will keep him from playing on Sunday; per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Johnson is not active for the game.

Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was expected to cover Johnson if Johnson had played. Look for Asomugha to play one side, given that no one really stands out as the No. 1 in Johnson's absence.
