How long or to what era does one have to hail to become officially an Old Time Chargers fan ?

    One season ?
    10 Seasons ?
    20 Seasons ?

    Or by Era ?

    Coach Ross

    Coach Coryell

    Coach Gilman

What defines an Old timer in your fan book?

I am just wondering what you all think?

In myu opinion any fan is a good fan. Dont matter if they are 'old timers' 'first timers' 'medium timers' 'life timers' or what have you.

I have seen the phrase that "old time Chargers fans do not exist" on other fans boards and I was wondering, what the hell is a "Old Time Chargers fan"? :icon_shrug: :icon_huh:

I would first look at the team of a fan who would post this comment. I have heard this from turd fans, but then they equate everything to "Unless you have won a SB, then you don't count as fans" or some **** like that.

An old time Charger fan is defined by each of us I guess. I myself would consider anyone who rremembers John Frieze an old time charger fan, but I have not seen the history that you, Toby SDRaiderh8er and a few others has.

An Old timer might be someone who has seen the team play in Balboa stadium, One who say Johney U tossing the pig skin in bolts. Saw Fouts passing his way to the HOF.

I dont know, the measure of a fan to me is what type of person they are, not how long they have loved the team. So to each their own. Sorry bro, dont quite know if I can properly answer your question.

I recuse myself. I went to the first game they ever played here. Watched them in the first AFL championship on TV when they were the LA Chargers.

All I can say is, I came in with Boss Ross & Stan, & I don't consider myself an "old-time Charger fan". Just an old-timer, maybe. :icon_shrug:

I'd probably say that you need to have been there since the 70's. But hey - fans are fans, as long as their loyal & supportive.

Someone that has followed the team since they were a kid. You can't really be any more of an "old time" fan than that.

I chanted "Bass Is An ***!" at charger games.

There was also I guy that sat near my parents(LV31) they called "HooHumm" because he used to start that chant during the "dark days"...

Agreed but I would add the amount of broken household items such as remotes, holes in walls (Chico days) etc as a good indication.

I've been a fan since '79. But it's not a matter of math; rather, a matter of perspective:

    1979-1982 = 4 seasons

The Chargers didn't make the playoffs from 1983 to 1991. Multiplying this period by the length of those seasons, enhanced x 2 by the "drudgery factor":

    (1983-1991)*2 = 18 seasons

Then, the Renaissance was ushered in by Bobby Ross and Stan Humphries:

    1992-1995 = 4 seasons

Next came the Whelihan/Moreno Paleolithic era, enhanced x 1.5 by the "ho-hum factor":

    (1996-1997)*1.5 = 3 seasons

    Then came the Dark Ages:

    (1998-2000)*10 = 30 seasons

Followed closely by the New Ice Age, again enhanced x 2 by the drudgery factor:

    (2001-2003)*2 = 6 seasons

And then the Age of Enlightenment:

    2004-2006 = 3 seasons

I have been a fan for 68 years. Ergo, I am an "Old Timer."

I think that just speaks to the fact that people don't know Chargers history.

1st game I went to was some pre-season GB/Charger game in the 70s sometime. I have no idea the year. Does that make me an old timer? No clue.. :) But damn, it was fun watching those Coryell years.

To me, an "Old Time" Charger fan remembers vividly the days of Air Coryell, Fouts, Winslow, Chandler, JJ, and even Chuck "Snowblower" Muncie.

A Charger fan is a Charger fan. I don't differentiate between the types of Charger fans.

If someone on other fans boards wants to comment on what is a Charger fan, it would mean about the same to me if his opinion was written on some toilet paper I used to wipe my ***. Which is to say others teams fans opinions on this subject are ****.

I hope all of us who have been around a while can convince the newer fans to learn and appreciate the history of our Lightening Bolts.

New fans are great ! They are the last few thousand that fill the stadium so the locals won't be blacked out. They can be the voters who swing a positive outcome for a new stadium. They buy jerseys to help generate income that Mr. Spanos can use in signing bonuses.

After we finally win the damn Lombardi, there will be a new "dividing" line in fandom history. The more the merrier .... join the party.

i "true" fan is a true fan, i think the term old timer should be used on charger fans who happen to be "old". a vet puts in at least 20 years of joy and pain.
