    Great commentary by our players...

Parker out, so Miami's Chambers acquired for draft pick

To Chargers players, yesterday's trade for Miami wide receiver Chris Chambers was a sign.

“I was just happy that we're serious,” linebacker Shawne Merriman said. “That's how serious they are about winning. It's not like they're going out and getting a player to fill a roster spot. They're getting a dawg. To see that as a player, it lets us know where we want to be as a team.”

LaDainian Tomlinson couldn't help but smile when asked about the deal, saying he was “very happy.” Philip Rivers called himself “excited.” Other players were as effusive in their praise of management as they had been for any move in A.J. Smith's tenure, with many approaching the general manager after hearing the news about an hour before the league trading deadline.

“A.J. pulling that off, it's incredible,” Tomlinson said.

“We definitely upgraded,” tight end Antonio Gates said. “I felt we were in good position to win games, to win a Super Bowl. But you enhance your chances when you bring in a guy like Chris Chambers to this offense. The magnitude of what it can become is kind of scary.”

Smith conceded he paid a “steep price,” sending Miami a second-round pick in the 2008 draft and leaving the Chargers with no choices between the first and fourth rounds (although they expect to receive a third-round compensatory selection for Donnie Edwards). But Smith also knew he was going to place receiver Eric Parker on injured reserve yesterday, which meant his team still needed another threat to go with Tomlinson, Gates and Vincent Jackson.

Gates and Tomlinson spoke of how defenses would have to consider double-teaming the 5-foot-11, 210-pound Chambers, who averaged 62 catches, 879 yards and seven touchdowns in his first six NFL seasons. They said if opponents decide they need to spend more resources on the tight end and receivers, they would have to commit fewer players to stop the run.

“Then . . . ” Gates said, his voice trailing off as he smiled and pointed to Tomlinson's locker....

Hearing how excited the players are, really shows this was a great move. They see the limitations in the offense despite LT and Gates. I also don't find it ironic that Rivers has become erratic ever since McCardell and Parker were no longer regular starters towards the end of last season.

I have to agree... again, from yesterday's discussions. This is all good news, and with the players embracing this... we're going to have some fun. :icon_banana::icon_banana::icon_banana::icon_banana:

Hey maybe with our CBs having to practice against Chambers, they will improve. I mean how hard can it be to cover VJ all day? :icon_shrug:

"Chris Chambers struggled in 2006 with just 59 receptions and four touchdowns."

Not knocking Parker, but by comparison he had 48 catches and zero TDs last year. Chambers may not be an "elite" wide receiver, but he's the closest thing to a #1 this team has had in a while. Chambers is going to make this offense better.

And his QBs absolutely sucked *** last year. Joey, Daunte(injured) and Cleo. Not to mention a HC who had cashed in the season.

I agree that he is a big upgrade over what we have here. Martin was the last #1 guy we had here. Everyone since him has been a bust or #2 or #3 on almost any other team in the league.

Excellent post Kwak. We need to let the kid play a game before we roast him. I for one am glad that AJ who has made more stellar personnel moves than bad ones has taken a step to improve our team.

But face it, our jobs as fans is to be the armchair coaches and GMs.
