Wednesday’s waiver wire will be the most anticipated in recent NFL history.

Randy Moss has company with another former Pro Bowl player on the open market Wednesday. The Chargers have officially waived linebacker Shawne Merriman, which was expected for weeks.

Below is a list of teams that could be interested in Merriman, either through the waiver wire or through free agency if he is not claimed. Merriman hasn’t been effective since 2007 because of injuries. But there should be interest in a 26-year-old player who has 43.5 career sacks.

Baltimore: The Ravens always have room for good pass rushers.

Dallas: It’s been reported that the Cowboys aren’t interested, but it’s a fit.

Denver: The Broncos are battered at linebacker and really need a pass rusher.

Green Bay: There’s a need, but the Packers don’t go after vets.

Houston: Not a great fit, but there are injury issues here.

Kansas City: The Chiefs could always use another pass rusher, but it’s a long shot.

Miami: This could be a legitimate fit.

New England: I could see this fit if he clears waivers.

New Orleans: The Saints almost traded for him in April.

    New York Jets: See Baltimore.

Oakland: Merriman would look good in Silver and Black.

San Francisco: I wouldn’t be shocked if Merriman is a 49er.

Washington: I could see Merriman heading home.

I think without roids he is useless. Besides this he is injured all the time. Too bad he was great when he juiced for 50 pounds power.

Sad but his roid use will and has made him fame. He will have his own show or be on some nfl show soon.

John Jefferson got exiled to the wastelands of Green Bay. This feels eerily reminescent. Karma is a biiitchh.

Drew Brees, Donnie Edwards, Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, Ladanian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman

Pretty impressive list of players the Chargers have let go prematurely?

So far all accept Merriman (yet) have gone on to contribute significantly on the teams they went too...some even won superbowls after they left!

The Nix has been there almost a year now and has done nothing to impress me. So this is par for the course. Good luck Shawne. TO loved it there. Ralph Wilson thinks it's 1989 still.

    On todays Chargers team...

    Phillip Rivers replaces Drew Brees
    Burnett replaces Edwards
    Cooper replaces Seau
    Eric Weddle replaces Rodney Harrison
    Ryan Mathews replaces LT
    Larry English replaces Merriman

Only Rivers is a genuine upgrade over Drew Brees (despite Brees's success), in most of the other positions the jury is still out and time will tell.

Burnett is a decent player but is no Edwards and Cooper will never be a Junior Seau. Weddle has potential to be a great safety and could surpass Harrison yet there is no denying that Harrison was let go prematurely IMO

I think you are forgetting those dark days. Edwards was a stiff that let people drag him for 10 yards, and Seau and Harrison couldn't stay healthy at the end. Harrison had Eric Parker disease his last two seasons, as I recall. I don't think anyone thought that Rodney was out of gas, but how many years do you let a guy linger when he is always hurt? I guess Buster proves that it's 4.

What Donnie Edwards were you watching in Kansas City? Maybe the one was with the Chiefs (under Marty) prior to being a Charger. It would have to be if you think he left San Diego to go on to success. When he went back to KC it was to play in Gunther Cunningham's Cover-2 based 4-3 scheme and he floundered miserably as both a MIKE and SAM LB in that respect. He had a "moderate" return to form when Todd Haley became the HC and brought in the 3-4, but even then he was only seeing playing time because Derrick Johnson ended up in Haley's doghouse and was struggling with the scheme change, and in 2009 both DJ and Edwards were outplayed by the likes of Demorrio Williams and rookie UDFA Jovan Belcher, IIRC. (I'm sure Power Trap, or whatever the heck our resident Chiefs-jocker around here calls himself, will eventually show up and add in his two cent, but every Chiefs fan I know detested Donnie's play after he "came home".)

Buddy nix probably had alot to do with drafting merriman. And knows him well from being on the team. I hope it works out for both. It will be interesting to see if merriman was dogging it this year to just get released. I'm guessing he was. I won't be surprised if jackson does the same thing now seeing how well it worked for merriman. Though jackson seems a little slow in the brain department to figure things out.

I know there is always turnover in players every year, I only sort to highlight those players that have been long-time contributers that may have been cut loose to soon

Yes Edwards was light in the tackle sometimes but he was only about 225 pounds and playing the MLB position!!

In his final two years at SD...

    2006 - 100 Tackles, 2 Forced Fumbles, 3 Interceptions
    2005 - 114 Tackles, 2 Forced Fumbles, 2 Interceptions

He even had 80 odd tackles the next year he went back to KC with less playing time!

I'd rather wear an old Donnie Edwards Chargers jersey than a Merriman.

Whats amazing about some of your thinking is that it's ok to lose all this talent no matter what the reasons. We are 3-5, 3rd in our division. Very thin at certain positions and people are still laughing talent out the door.

The brainwash is strong with the Chargers FO. Arent you guys fans because you want to win? I guess your more a fan of business decisions. Fortune 500 types.

I think this was a stupid cut. The guy is 26, he has time to rebuild his carrer, and he's going to come cheap.

and how many games has he been out injured in the last 4 years combined?

If you want to continue to pay guys who are injury prone, keep Buster Davis for an experiment in how long they last.

Buster never showed a single flash of talent, so you can't compare the two.

It'll figure if Merriman becomes a 10 sack per season guy and an emotional leader again with someone else. I don't care what people think, his carrer was wrecked by and injury on a late hit, not by steroids.
