Philip Rivers has absolutely nothing to hide and even less to be ashamed of. If any athlete is stripped down to where only his emotions are showing, it's the Chargers quarterback. His book appears open, with enough copies in print to easily check out of the library. An easy read. A page-turner.

But Rivers is either understood or misunderstood. He should be "Tom Sawyer," but to his uninformed readers he's "Ulysses." He's either a great football player or a chatty doll.

Some see him as one of the NFL's finest quarterbacks. Some see him the product of a system.

    He's great. He's overrated. He's tough. He's a wimp. He's a leader. He's a follower. He's in control. He's free-wheeling. He's Southern comfort. He's a country bumpkin. He's The Man. He's The Child. He's a rock. He's a crybaby. He's stand-up. He's a whiner. He takes his lumps. He's a complainer. He's cool. He's excitable. His teammates love him. They can't stand him.
Or, to put it simply, he talks too much, to everyone in is orbit, hardly conduct becoming a quarterback.

Rarely have we known such a recognizable paradox in this town. In the end, he may be the only person who really can decipher the Rivers Code of Conduct, because no one knows Philip Rivers better than Philip Rivers, and he isn't ashamed of what he sees in the mirror.

If nothing else, he's true to himself. He doesn't point fingers. If he screws up, he admits it. I don't know him well enough to say he's honest to a fault. It's hard to think of anyone who is or was, unless he was healing the sick and raising the dead 2000 years ago.

"All it is is the competitiveness in me that everybody sees. I hate to lose," Rivers says. "My emotions come out. It's not negatively driven."

It's easy to compare Rivers with another Chargers quarterback, Dan Fouts, who could spend a great deal of time being a jerk. I got along about as well with him as anybody in the media, and he still was an acute pain in the rear end. He reveled in it. He enjoyed his reputation. He was in charge. Certainly not all of his teammates liked him, but they respected him.

How much of it was put on, we'll never really know, but Fouts was the same on the field as he was away from it, at least in public. He was tough, man, but so is Rivers, even if he basically is the polar opposite of Fouts after games – when Fouts was intolerable, win or lose – or with people in general.

How many quarterbacks have enough within them to play in an AFC Championship Game six days after knee surgery? Rivers did. Fouts probably would have.

Rivers says his shows of emotion are just him, what he's always been and probably always will be.

"I'm not getting mad at a guy for missing a play," he says. "There's no lack of confidence in one another. I'm not walking around with a frown on my face. If I lift weights with a frown on my face, does it mean I care more?

"I'd say 90 percent of everything I say and do is positive, or in a positive manner. Enthusiasm is positive. I play like I'm still in my backyard as a kid at home in Alabama. The tree is out of bounds. If I thought you were out of bounds, we'd argue for 15 minutes. It's just the way it's been for me, growing up in the game.

"I guess it's expected for a quarterback to act a certain way, not get excited. But I've always seen myself as a football player, not just a quarterback. Look at Brett Favre. I'm not comparing myself to Favre, but he's emotional. He throws snowballs around after touchdowns."

Me, I have no problems with Rivers' demeanor. It's refreshing.

"Most of what I do is to help us," he says. "I kind of show what I think. I didn't just turn this way. I've always played with this passion. Look at me in college."

Rivers may not be best friends with everyone in the locker room, but he doesn't have to be. Fouts sure wasn't, and if you want to know why I keep comparing Rivers with a Hall of Famer, just remember Fouts never played in a Super Bowl.

"I like to think I'm both, liked and respected," Rivers says, "but I know you can't get everyone to like you. I've always tried to have somewhat of a touch with every guy in the room. It's important for a leader and a quarterback, but I'm not best buddies with everyone. We're not all going to the dorm together.

"You have to establish trust and respect. I don't know if I'd say I hang with the guys. I have a family and four little ones. I'm a homebody."

As for rapping with the fans, Rivers says he's toned it down.

"But those weren't manufactured," he says. "They weren't for show."

It's just Philip Rivers being Philip Rivers. Oh, and he leads the NFL in passing.

I thought Rivers sparring with the crowd last year was hillarious!!

I couldn't believe the negative press he got after it and he defo should keep it up if anybody tries to give him s**t during a game!

Great article, I was too young to know Fouts was a Jerk (I was 10 in the Cincy playoff game) off the field.........one difference between them will be the Super Bowl. Long after LT is gone Rivers will still be chasing the Lombardi.

Their toughness in playoff games (Cincy for Fouts, NE for Rivers) is a great character trait for a QB.

Yeah I kinda got into the Chargers near the end of Fouts career but from afar I never heard what a tosser he was. U learn something new every day s'pose.

I love Rivers 'moxy'. I even remember a British journalist who watched one of the practices in London saying he could not believe how 'into it and vocal' Rivers was on the field. He thought it amazing for the QB/leader to be the one doing all the yappin.

As long as he keeps tearing the Broncos a new *** I'm rollin with #17.

They are and always have been the team you have to beat to win the West.

Philip gave us the lead with another comeback in Denver earlier this year. That loss is not on him or the offense.

*ugh* what a fuking disaster this season has been.

    I'm very happy with Rivers!!!

Choosing between Brees and Rivers was the hardest choice for any NFL team I've witnessed but we made the right decision!!!

I really don't understand why the media hates him so much. Especially when they're on their knees in front of Cutler

Well... that could get the blood boiling through Rivers veins and it's ALL good!!!

the "media" doesn't like him 'cause his motion is so twek (yes, i said twek) and he's not the smoothest mover (runner) IMO. bernie rivers was never that much of a media darling either (perhaps he was late in his career).
(you love the bernie rivers don'cha nickle, you know you do...)
the guy is a winner and this year's disapointment isn't his fault as far as i'm concerned.

They hate Rivers because Cutler is their little darling and Philip said naughty words to him.

    Embrace it.

I LOVE Rivers' passion and talking, in fact I have missed seeing more of it this season. I could give a **** how other fan bases feel or the media wants to take it. He loves the game of football, he hates to lose and if he wants to chat it up with people - he can go right ahead IMO.

Cutler is a Donkey and the donkeys always get good press.

Unfortunately Rivers gets the bad press because he plays for the Chargers. The Chargers get all the bad press.

To the Media, Cutler is the God and Rivers is the Satan.

So I am embracing all the Hate.

Yeah. They had their Cutler knee pads on before he even had a winning season.

If he advances one game in the playoffs, they're going to talk about him like a Super Bowl MVP.

I feel like we're always in the game with PR - not an emotion that I carried when Brees was here. In fact, I more often felt that Brees was gonna blow it with an INT.

PR's a fiery, competitive guy. The media can blow me.

Sounds like another team in that division.....but there 8-5......Rivers is a good QB but hes not a big time big game. put the game on his back type of QB like cutler is......How many game winning drives does he have? When it matters??

Maybeyou should pay attention to the sports world....The sports world NEVER respects the broncos or gives us good press.....You guys are 5-8 and turn on espn and they will tell you that your gonna win the afc west.....GET A GRIP the media has been sucking the chargers since week 2 swearing that you guys are gonna turn it around. So please dont give us broncos fans crap about the media.....espn is your biggest band wagon network ever......

Cutler is god because cutler is great and has about 20 game winning drives to his young career. Let alone the types of throws he makes when you break down the game film.

Dont ever say the Broncos get good press and all that other crap if your a charger fan. We get zero respect on these networks. I hate espn for that sole reason.....because they dont respect us. because they dont realize that were in rebuilding mode with so many guys hurt and so many rookies/1st/2nd year players starting but yet we still find ways to win......nobody respects denver and i like it that way.....Dont forget who everybody and there mama picked to make it out the AFC as a whole this year.......YOUR CHARGERS.

I do read the media and all I read is how great Cutler is compared to Rivers and how far superior the Broncos are compared to the Chargers.

I am not talking about just one media network but in general the Media they love the Broncos in comparison to the Chargers.

All I read is how the Next John Elway (Jay Cutler) is doing compared the next Ryan leaf (Philip Rivers) is doing.

So I guess we both are reading totally different types of media.

blah blah blah - and you call us whiners. give me a break!

Prior to this season, the Chargers had EARNED the respect they were given. Just as your Donkey's had earned theirs [or lack of].

    Chargers:
    2004 - 12/4
    2005 - 9/7
    2006 - 14/2
    2007 - 11/5

    Broncos:
    2004 - 10/6
    2005 - 13/3
    2006 - 9/7
    2007 - 7/9

In 2006, the Broncos were favored to go to the Super Bowl after previouly losing the conference championship game to the Steelers in 05, only to turn in a disappointing season in 06. Sound familiar? Now, the Chargers have had a disappointing season of their own. They were not able to turn it around as they had done in seasons past [hence the belief that they could].

The fact is, that due to their recent records, rebuilding and injuries the Donkey's still have more to prove if they want to be considered elite or as something special. As of now, they have proven inconsistent, injury prone, and lucky... there is talent and potential there but they have not proven themselves as great. If they manage to go anywhere in the playoffs, I would expect that perception to start changing.

As for the beef between Rivers and Cutler... this crap was blown out of proportion by the media so they'd have something to talk about. They chose Cutler as the good guy and Rivers as the villain. But, it doesn't really matter - we all know that ESPN and sports media in general has an East Coast bias - lucky for both the Chargers and the Broncos, they hate the Raiders/Al Davis more. So at least we have that :p
