Philip Rivers spent his rookie season in San Diego learning from the sidelines.
After of a lengthy training camp holdout, Rivers spent the 2004 season between numbers two and three on the team’s depth chart. When Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith pulled off a blockbuster draft day trade with the New York Giants to acquire Rivers, many thought he would battle Drew Brees for the team’s starting quarterback position. As it turned out, Brees had a Pro Bowl season and Rivers was limited to action in two games.
Growing up in Alabama, Rivers did not attend his first professional football game until he signed with the Chargers.
He wears number 17 in honor of his father, Steve, who wore the same number in high school. Philip has worn it since the ninth grade. Philip’s number was retired before his final home game at North Carolina State.
Philip married his childhood sweetheart, Tiffany, after his freshman season at N.C. State when he was just 19 years old. The couple has two daughters, Halle and Caroline. Philip asked North Carolina State Head Coach Chuck Amato for his permission before asking Tiffany to marry him. Philip’s dad was the best man in the wedding.
Philip’s name, spelled with one “l,” comes from the Bible. He prefers to be called “Philip” but will answer to “Phil.” In college, his nickname was “Cheese” as in a Phil(ly) cheesesteak sandwich. His favorite meal is meatloaf, fried okra and cabbage, and he enjoys a wide range of music from country music to the band OutKast.
Rivers’ favorite quarterbacks are Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Troy Aikman and Brett Favre. When he was in kindergarten, he worked as a water boy at Decatur High School in Decatur, Alabama, where his dad was the head coach. As part of a fifth-grade project, he had to make a poster about his dreams and aspirations. On the poster, he pasted his face over that of a Minnesota Vikings player who had appeared on a cover of Sports Illustrated.

TRANSACTION HISTORY: Drafted in first-round (4) by New York Giants, April 24, 2004... traded to Chargers for Eli Manning, third-round choice in 2004, and first- and fifth-round choices in 2005, April 24, 2004.
