I always enjoy scanning the sidelines with my binoculars during lulls in the action. There are a lot of people wandering around doing all kinds of different things.

Last night I catch sight of a young blondish dude in a black suit and a yellow tie. He is just standing around holding a box. It wasn't very large, if I'm guessing it was like 8" long, 6" deep and 6" tall. It looked a lot like this one, but with no handle on the front...

Anyway, I was intrigued. What the hell is this guy's function? Why is he walking around with this box. What could possibly be in the box, and why do they need a guy in a suit to carry it around?

He started off on the Chargers sideline, then wandered over to the other sideline. He was here, there, and everywhere. He talked to all kinds of people throughout the game, including A.J. Smith, A.G. Spanos, and Jim Steeg.

Whenever there is a break in the action, I locate the guy and he's always got the box. As far as I could tell, he performed no other function during the game, he just held the box. He never gave it to anyone else, and it never got opened. At one point he shook it, so I'm guessing it wasn't anything fragile. He appeared to be wearing an earpiece and a microphone, so I guess he was in contact with someone else (the Box Master?).

I was originally thinking camera equipment, or microphones, but I didn't think they would need a guy in a suit to carry that kind of thing around. Then I was thinking maybe he was some kind of special security guy, and maybe he had a piece in there. But he looked like he was maybe only 18 or so, so I don't think that was it.

I am completely baffled, anyone have any ideas? :icon_huh:

And oh yeah, what is the function of the guy on the sidelines with the long orange gloves?

Don't they put things like game-balls and/or significant record-breaking footballs into a box like that? For example, LT's 130th TD run, or Tolbert's first TD reception...?

It seems wierd the guy would be carrying it around all game long, though.

I'm stumped, but it's good to know there's someone else out there who would be as intrigued by this kind of thing as I would.

If it was a Raiders game I would've said it was Al Davis' soul... all packed and ready to go.

I'm pretty sure that has to be handled by a guy in a radiation suit and long, insulated tongs.

Then I think it would have just been an empty box.

(and maybe the Grim Reaper has updated his wardrobe)

orange glove dude is TV time out homeboy. crosses his arms refs see it, TV TO (i beleive).
i don't think the guy would be holding record book balls since i beleive the equipment managers from each team places tape on signinfigant balls with pertinent info. and puts 'em away for safe keep'in.
could he have been a doctor? like an anathesiologist?

The guy with the orange gloves is the TV Commercial guy. When the networks go to a TV timeout and run a commercial, that guy will come out on to the field and place his hand with the orange glove on; he will place it across his chest. This indicates the TV commercial is still running. When he drops his hand and drops back off onto the sidelines, the game is now back on live Camera.

This was a result off a Charger Game miscue.

Several years ago, here at Qualcomm, the Chargers kicked off, after getting approval from the refereeā€™s, and ran down and stopped the guy who had caught the ball.

Problem was that TV was still running a commercial, so no one saw that play, so they made the Chargers re-kick again. Well those guys are now tired, and the other team got off a nice return. Once again there were a lot of very mad Charger fans because of that call.

I don't think it was large enough to hold a ball.

    Indeed.

I just wanted to open the damn thing so I could move on. Now I'll probably be looking for him at the next game too unless I get this riddle solved.

Yeah, I kept giving my wife and friends updates. Soon they were enthralled with the whole thing too. It was quite the mystery.

I saw that guy also but I didn't pay as much attention to detail as you did. To me it appeared to be about the size of a hard camera bag.

There is a slot in the top for contributions to the officiating crew. During the replays, each team makes a "donation", which in turn decides the outcome of the replay.

Norval forgot his "petty cash" for the Broncos game, thus sealing our fate in game 2........:icon_rofl:

For one thing, I'm guessing he was on the payroll and not a fan.

Secondly, I let this **** go ages ago, but here you are trying to start it up again.

I have three theories...with three being my main guess.

1.) This is spare equipment for the Head Referee so that if his battery on his mic goes out, this is a new headset/mic for the ref.

2.) Back up battery for the instant replay camera

3.) Keys to the Locker room to keep spies and media out.

    Holy ****!

Box Guy evidently has access to the locker room. I was just watching NFL Network, and while Phillip Rivers is being interviewed in the locker room, Box Guy walks behind him.
