Anybody know why Kellen Winslow's #80 isn't retired, and why Malcom Floyd gets to wear it???

Nobody wears #14, so why not #80. Winslow is arguably the best TE in history in the HOF.

    Just curious...:icon_huh:

Or perhaps it's because the Chargers don't retire jersey numbers. :icon_shrug:

    Chill.

Winslow gave us all his years, arguably the best TE to play the game.

    So to answer your question.

    I have no idea.

    He was good enough.

They do retire jerseys - Fouts and Alworth are retired.

He had a surly attitude that has prevailed long after he retired that is reason enough for management not to give him full Charger Legend status. Can't say as I blame them.

Didn't Spanos and him butt heads? I don't expect his number to be retired as long as Spanos owns the team.

    Who's # gets retired first?

Jr. or KW? I say 55 is hanging up next to 19 and 14 long before 80 is.

I think the NFL has something to say about that also. With the NFL requiring players to wear numbers for positions, Teams will run out of numbers rapidly if they were allowed to retire numbers.

I think it's fine for a few special players, but I agree they shouldn't be as frivulous with it as they are in baseball because of that.

Your right, I think the team has to get permission from the league before they can retire a number.

I know that Kellen was treated very badly by management after having major knee surgery. He was pushed to play and he was called out publicly, they even said he was faking it. I'm sure he went all out for the team and shortened his career by going when he knew he wasn't ready.

Any player who spend his entire career with ONE team, and is regarded as one of, if not THE best at his position, and is in the HOF, should have his number retired IMO.

Retired numbers by Chargers should be:

    #80 Winslow
    #18 Joiner

    No Seau IMO.

I didn't say they never retired jersey numbers, just that they don't do it anymore. The team made that decision many years ago to stop retiring numbers. Winslow did not make the cut.

Wasn't Joiner a Bengal and Oiler before he came to the Chargers?

Yeah, it could also be because in baseball, a team only has to have about 25 players maximum, while in the NFL it's 53.

So, that's an extra 28 players per team in baseball that can have retired numbers.

I think it will be a looooonnnnggg while, maybe never, that Junior Seau gets his #55 retired by San Diego.

Not after throwing that retirement ceremony in the Spanos' faces.

Since the team is a family run organization, and there will be a Spanos owning and running the team for decades, we won't be alive to see it.

    No to Seau
