STREET PEOPLE: Buckeye, Charger and husband
    (SD Union-Tribune STREET Section, 12-27-07)

    Name: Matt Wilhelm
Who: "I am a linebacker for the San Diego Chargers. I am blessed to play a game for a living. And I would have to say I am a great husband to my beautiful wife, Vanessa."
    Age: 26
Hangs out: "I am a homebody, so our home in Poway. I have everything I need there, so why leave? As far as the off-season, though, we have a place back where I am from in Ohio and we go there and always throw a Fourth of July party and chill with all of our family and friends. Otherwise, it's definitely traveling abroad."
Best place for lunch: "Love my BBQ at Brett's BBQ in 4S Ranch, and I have to add best place for breakfast by far is Hash House a Go Go in Hillcrest!"
Favorite bands: "U2, Linkin Park. I like anything with a good beat."
Last song you downloaded? "That's tough because I am always downloading
stuff to get me amped for the game. Probably 'I Get Money' by 50 Cent was the last one."

Clicks: "Chargers.com, ESPN.com and MattWilhelm.com (we just started a few foundations here in San Diego and two back in Ohio, so the site is under construction)."
Plays: "PS3: 'Call of Duty 4,' 'Tiger Woods' and 'Fight Night Boxing.' Then
on the PSP, hands down 'The World Series of Poker.' I take all the guys' cash on the away games."
Watches: "Gotta watch my Buckeyes on Saturday either at home or at Moondoggie's, 'SportsCenter,' of course, 'Entourage,' and I have to admit that my wife and I are reality junkies, so 'Run's House,' 'I Love New York' and MTV."
Reads: "The Bible and my weekly playbook (my second Bible). And now pregnancy books with Vanessa because we are expecting our first child, a boy, this March!"
Loves: "My wife, our dog, my family and friends, San Diego weather, the beaches here, my teammates and running through the helmet on game days, challenges, golfing, Vanessa's cooking, working out, real people (bump the haters), candy (gotta have them Red Vines and Skittles), and 'Star Wars' ... fighting with my lightsabers with my teammates' kids. I also love volunteering and making a difference in the community."
Hates: "California traffic, rainy days here because people drive like there is over a foot of snow on the ground, when my teammates steal my soap, selfish or envious people who forget what's important in life, peas, mushrooms, onions, overzealous groupies, and making a mistake in the game."
Wilhelm and the AFC West champion Chargers take a five-game winning streak to Oakland for their final game of the regular season Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:15 p.m. on CBS.

Matt Wilhelm describes his perfect San Diego weekend:
"There are actually two scenarios. During the off-season, wake up whenever I want, get a workout in just to offset going out later that night, go to the beach and/or host a barbecue, then get up Sunday, go to church and go to brunch. During the season, finish a good week of practice, relax and go to a nice dinner with Vanessa and our friends, watch a film and get my mind right the night before the game, get up and eat a good breakfast at home, then off
to the stadium for another Chargers win!"

Matt Wilhelm tells us the 10 songs he'd put on his perfect mix CD:
    1. "Juicy," Notorious B.I.G.
    2. "Entourage" theme song
    3. Any song from "Star Wars"
    4. "Hells Bells," AC/DC (our kickoff game song)
    5. "99 Problems," Jay-Z
    6. "Can't Tell Me Nothing," Kanye West
    7. My wedding song
    8. "Nuthin' But a G Thang," Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
    9. "World Hold On," Bob Sinclar (takes me back to this summer in St.
    Tropez)
    10. "Paperboy," Ditty (takes me back to old times)
    Howard Lipin / Union-Tribune photos

My brother took me to "Hash House a Go Go" the last time I was in SD.

Looks like there might be a baby Wilhelm on the way... :)

Come on, dudes. A gnarly linebacker needs a Newf or a boxer or a Huskie(maybe a Malamute) or an English Sheep Dog or a Bernese-all good natured cupcakes. Only one thing in that picture belongs in his lap and that's whose dog it is. A guy needs a dog with a head bigger than his thumb-whether or not he is a football player.

I've always been the monogamous sort. Perhaps I was inartful in my inference, but a guy still needs a dog he can rough house with. That dog cannot chase a frisbee, cannot retrieve a tennis ball, cannot keep up on a run, has negative bouyancy in a pool, is dead meat in even moderate surf, barks at the wind and has to take five minutes eating a chunk of your meatball sandwich.

Hay TK... Look what I just found... This is for the "Donnie's" out there everywhere. Your first step in your recovery is to admit that you are an ankle biter... Just say it...

I never thought I'd ever have a "puntable" dog, but I bought my wife a chihuahua for Christmas. He is tiny right now, but he's pretty cool. I hate big slobbery dogs anyway, so this will work.

Little dog droppings and house accidents are soooo much easier to clean up.

What did you name your dog?
