Installing the newest Windows Update, I am being asked to install some program (Windows Genuine Advantage) to avoid software piracy. WTF is this all about? If I install it, is it going to hinder any pirated software on my computer (not that I would ever have any such illiegal stuff on my computer :icon_razz: )? Should I care if my copy of Windows is pirated? Is this just another way for Bill Gates to steal my money later on down the road?

Thoughts? Did anyone else get this notification, or is it a virus that I picked up surfing porn- ERRRRRRRRRR- watching educational videos online?

It is used to detect any M$ software. If you have a legit copy of Office and Windows, it shouldn't be an issue. If you don't, then it won't let you update.

When is the last time you updated Windows!? This has been a norm with Windows XP for quite some time .. upwards of a year or more.

EC, don't install it. If you install it and it discovers your windows serial number is pirated (which it likely will), you wont be able to download new updates. I downloaded it to one of the office computers here and had to reformat and re-install Windows XP, 'cause it's a major gig taxer. If you go to "custom install" or whatever the option is when it prompts you to update you can unselect the genuine advantage update and it will skip it and not prompt you again. Hope it's not too late!

Thanks for the replies. I took Nancy Reagan's advice and just said no.
