Padres reach deal with Jose Cruz Jr.

    December 4, 2006

The Padres and outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. have agreed to terms on a one-year, $650,000 contract. General Manager Kevin Towers said Cruz and Terrmel Sledge, as it stands now, will share time in left field next season. Cruz, a switch-hitter whose strength is hitting left-handed pitching, batted .233 with 16 doubles and five home runs last year for the Dodgers.

The deal is pending a physical exam of Cruz, who will turn 33 in April. Towers said the acquisition of Cruz, who has played all three outfield spots, does not rule out the addition of another left fielder. – TOM KRASOVIC

    Padres nearing agreement with Maddux

    Posted: 23 minutes ago
The Padres are the front-runners for Greg Maddux, but the pitcher's agent, Scott Boras, is still pursuing a better offer for the free-agent right-hander, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Padres are offering Maddux, 40, a one-year contract with a club option for 2008, according to a major-league source. Early Monday night, it appeared the team was near an agreement with the pitcher.
However, representatives for Boras told officials from other clubs later Monday night that Maddux remained available. The Dodgers also are unwilling to give Maddux a second guaranteed year, sources say.
A decision by Maddux is expected Tuesday; the Padres are believed to be his first choice, and the Dodgers are thought to be the only other club for which he would pitch.
Boras' last-minute marketing attempts create the possibility of a team such as the Astros entering the bidding. The Dodgers also could sweeten their offer, forcing the Padres to leave other options open.
"You never know with Scott," one major-league official says.
Maddux, who has a home in the San Diego area, has long wanted to pitch for the Padres. He was 15-14 with a 4.20 ERA for the Cubs and Dodgers last season, and has 333 career victories. Ken Rosenthal is FOXSports.com's senior baseball writer.

Anything can happen with Scott Borass in the mix. Why does he have to be Maddux' AND Zito's agent???

Maddux' presence on the Pads staff would be very good, IMHO...he could teach Jake and Hensley a thing or three about pitching.

Is that all we can do is sign 33 year old Cruz? Thats not much help. We dont look too good. Im hearing Pat Burrell's name. But still, not looking to be a healthy lineup of run producers.
