CHARGERS: Smith hopes team has enough depth to contend

SAN DIEGO ---- Chargers general manager A.J. Smith criticized his own performance following a disappointing 2011 season. He said he didn't flesh out his roster with enough depth to weather the injuries woes of an NFL season.
He made that a point of emphasis this offseason, giving strength to the second- and third-string units in addition to some high-profile veteran imports.
Smith said he knew injuries would test his roster construction at some point during the season. He didn't think it would happen in Week 1.
Running back Ryan Mathews and offensive tackle Jared Gaither won't play Monday, and the Chargers could be without nose tackle Antonio Garay.
"We didn't even get through the preseason before injuries had an effect," Smith said on Wednesday afternoon. "It's not ideal, but here we are. Our depth will be tested in the very first game."
On paper, the Chargers seem to be deep at most positions.
That's certainly the case at running back, where Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain, Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley are available to fill in.
Aubrayo Franklin and Cam Thomas have filled in admirably for Garay, who has been out nearly a month with an ankle injury.
But the Chargers are struggling to fill Gaither's sizable shoes.
The Chargers came into camp with a strong quartet on the left side. :cautious: Smith said he hoped Gaither would play every snap, but a back injury will prevent that. Brandyn Dombrowski was expected to be his backup, but a cyst on his foot has kept him out the entire preseason. Tyronne Green will start at left guard, which leaves undrafted rookie Mike Harris.
While Jeromey Clary will start at right tackle, there isn't much behind him after Mario Henderson and Anthony Davis were released.
"We were extremely comfortable with the tackles we had coming into the season," Smith said. "We were four deep on the left, and then injuries happened in rapid succession. But, as I've said, injuries happen. You have to deal with them. Right now, it's the next man up and that's Mike Harris."
Because the injury to Gaither happened so early, the Chargers have had time to adjust.
"It's not like we lost our guy the Thursday before the game," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said. "If that happened, you'd be a little stressed. But we've been working with Mike and this starting five throughout camp, and we're playing well together.
"I have complete confidence in the guys up front."
Reinforcements won't come until after the season opener, after which a player's salary is not guaranteed should he only play a few games.
The team has endured a rash of injuries in recent seasons. It was defensive linemen in 2009, wide receivers in 2010 and offensive linemen and outside linebackers in 2011.
"You build a football team through free agency and the draft meant to proceed through the regular season and hopefully the postseason," Smith said. "Backups are very important to me, and I didn't do a good enough job last season helping us deal with injuries.
"We tried to do a better job of that, and we believe we've added strong depth to the roster, but you really don't know until you play the games.
    "Starting Monday, we'll find out."
    Mathews likely out for opener
Mathews was active in individual workouts for the second consecutive day, but has not been cleared for contact meaning his odds of playing Monday are not good.
"I don't have a schedule," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "I will say that I love his attitude regarding the injury. He's doing everything possible to get back. He'd have to get the reps necessary to prepare for a game, and he's not at that point yet."
The Chargers would like to ease him back into practice and increase the contact he faces over time. The prospect of re-injury is a concern.
"We're evaluating him and we'll see how it goes," Turner said. "We'd like to increase his activity each day. Hopefully things continue to go well and we can do that."
    Et cetera
NT Antonio Garay returned to practice for the first time since being carted of the practice field on Aug. 11 with an ankle injury. Coach Norv Turner was non-committal on Garay's playing status, and did not volunteer his level of activity in practice. ... LT Jared Gaither remains out with a back injury and WR Vincent Brown (ankle) continues to rehab at the facility.
