A talented runner who gets the job done. He's not as likely to go all the way as Mathews is but, on the other hand, he's nowhere near as fumble-prone.

Just for the record, in the most recent season, 2013:

    Mathews 285 carries = 1 fumble lost
    Woodhead 106 carries = 2 fumbles lost

So, Mathews turned the ball over once every 285 carries,
and Woodhead turned the ball over once every 53 carries...or 5.4 times as often....

Mathews definitely has struggled to hold onto the ball, but these numbers
make it pretty hard to say that Woodhead is "...nowhere near as fumble-prone."
I really like DW...he plays hard and is fun to watch...he's a big-time playmaker...
but his ypc is unremarkable since 2010.

4.0+ YPC every year after 2010 is still very productive in today's NFL, and besides, his receiving yards tell the main tale...76 catches for 605 yards last season! 1,034 yards of total offense for a role player is pretty darn impressive, a split that only known threats like Sproles can match.

106 carries only tells part of the story, though, since many of Woodhead's touches come on receptions.

Interesting stats, but as I recall Mathews has been lucky on several occasions when, having dropped the ball, either he or one of his teammates has picked it up. That is what happened on the very played he was injured on, wasn't it?

Well we can certainly argue about the validity of such stats, and I have been a Mathews backer for the most part... However I think that you have cherry picked the numbers you are looking at a bit too much.

To look at the whole image, lets take a career peek..
    http://www.nfl.com/player/dannywoodhead/4327/careerstats
    Woodhead, 7 seasons, 4 fumbles.
    http://www.nfl.com/player/ryanmathews/497188/careerstats
    Mathews, 5 seasons, 15 fumbles (14 rushing, 1 receiving).

I think the persons statement about Mathews being more fumble prone is not only accurate but supported by the entire stats. I am not saying that Mathews is a bad back but he does need to hold onto the ball better. He will probably be the first to say so.

    Boys, boys...settle down. :p

I obviously wasn't dissing Woodhead...just showing how some very current
(most recent season) and relevant (turning the ball over) stats undermine the
notion that Mathews is much riskier running the ball...which was what I was addressing.

Obviously I could've chose other stats...it's almost impossible to use stats to make
a point without "cherry picking" being on the table. Yes, often it's just luck whether
a dropped ball becomes a turnover...we all know that. That said, though, the stats I cited
are current, relevant, and shed light on whether the Woodhead is "...nowhere near as fumble-prone" meme is really accurate at this point.

I suppose one could question your application or 'relevancy'. The facts are the facts and it is much more risky to have Mathews run the ball. Take this season for example, Mathews has fumbled twice in the last game how many did Woodhead?

Ryan and his coaches are working on the fumbling issue and he is taking better care of the ball, but historically, he has coughed it up much more, in a shorter span than Woodhead has.

All that said, I think Mathews has about 3x the touches in his career...

From my spot in the seats, that is exactly what happened after he dropped the ball. He got caught in a pile and was being bent into an awkward position as he was grabbing for the loose ball, and he among a bunch of big bodies in that mess.

I dont know if I would say he dropped the ball. It looked more like the exchange was fuggly from the get go. Whether it was Rivers not sticking the ball in, or Mathews not getting a grip I am not sure. But the exchange was not kosher at all...

Hand offs are never going to be perfect every single time that's why they get the big bucks for hanging on to the damn thing.

So typical, a thread about Danny Woodhead ends up being a negative thread about Ryans fumbles.

And now, Woody needs surgery. Now it seems like someone thought this out, and having some depth at RB is good. It's good for the new guys to get some reps, because they essentially have no choice.
