Woods didn't even get a cup of coffee in a crowded group

By Kevin Acee

It was apparent almost from the start that there was no room for Rashaun Woods in the Chargers' crowded receivers mix.

"We all came to a very early decision on his ability to help us," Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said yesterday, shortly after the team announced it had waived Woods. "We're really comfortable – and I mean really comfortable – with the six guys we have on this football team that have been in the Chargers system."

The early release of Woods also allows the former first-round draft pick to seek work elsewhere. Woods, the 30th overall selection in 2004 by the San Francisco 49ers, was acquired in a trade for Sammy Davis in April. Davis was the Chargers' first-round selection in 2003, so this move slams the door on what is so far Smith's only major draft blemish.
