Remember when Eli Manning had that dopier-than-usual look on his face after the San Diego Chargers, against his wishes, took him with the first overall pick of the 2004 Draft? Good times.

Despite the onstage awkwardness at Radio City Music Hall, Manning's Chargers' career lasted about as long as the previous quarterback the organization drafted in the first round.

Six years before, San Diego selected Ryan Leaf second overall (the Colts took Peyton Manning No. 1, as Pete kindly reminded me) and, well, let's just say that was just about the worst decision anybody anywhere has ever made.* And it was Leaf's experiences in San Diego that led to the Manning family politely requesting that the Chargers leave Eli the hell alone. At least that's the word on the street.

The Arizona Republic's Mark Fuller hears things (from a golfing partner close to the Leaf family):
... After they were drafted, [Peyton] Manning told Leaf about how well the Colts organization treated him. They basically bent over backward to make his transition to the NFL as smooth as possible, taking care of all the non-football stuff so Peyton could concentrate on immersing himself into the Colts offense.

Manning was stunned to hear that Leaf's experience was completely different. Our golfing partner said that Leaf was basically left to figure it out for himself. If that's true, you combine it with the legendary stories about what an immature jerk Leaf is and begin understand why he crashed so quickly. Again, this is coming from a family friend. Who knows what the Chargers did or did not do for their rookie QB, or whether their management team was equipped to deal with such a high-maintenance player.

Regardless of who was at fault for the failed Leaf-Chargers marriage, the allegedly shabby treatment of Leaf stuck with the Manning clan. And, our new golf buddy explained, that's why Archie Manning, the patriarch, threw such a fit on draft day when Eli was picked by San Diego.
That would certainly explain Archie's sudden "Um, yeah, Elisha ain't going to San Diego so don't even waste your time" change in demeanor. Perhaps more amazing: that it took five years for this story to come out, assuming it's even true.

Whatever, the Chargers shipped Eli to the Giants about an hour after they drafted him and it worked out pretty well for everybody. (Well, everybody but Leaf, who is still trying to piece his live back together.) New York, behind Manning, won the Super Bowl last year, and San Diego got Philip Rivers, and draft picks that would turn into Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding.

Leaf was legendary for being resistant to direction from ANYbody he didn't feel like taking it from. It makes FAR more sense to surmise that Leaf was offered much, if not all, of the assistance Manning got, but just blew it off.

I mean... this is a guy who was only an even money bet to attend team meetings.

Given all we know about Ryan, it's hard to believe that the team would offer him no support/direction, but EASY to believe that he turned down/ignored whatever support/direction he was offered.

This conclusion is consistent with everything else we know about the guy, and I find it a real challenge to cultivate any sympathy for Leaf.

Not sure why we are still talking about Eli, let alone Leaf. Ancient history. Let's talk more about how Rivers/Tomlinson/Merriman/Jackson are going to grind teams into dust this season!

If there was no Jay Cutler, ECry would be the most overrated QB in the NFL.

He is a decent QB, but he made a miracle escape in the Super Bowl, and rode the backs of his defense to a win, despite trying to choke the game away. He was HANDED the MVP because his last name is Manning.

Who cares, we got the better QB, who has become the leader of our offense, and a stud defensive player who is the heart and soul of our defense.

I'll take Dream boat captain and man of my dreams, Philip Rivers , over a Manning any day of the week. Archie and his babies can KMA - the Bolts may have missed with Leaf, but ultimately we got the best deal ever in the history of deals.

Thanks to the Leaf debacle, we ended up on the path to LT, Brees, PR, Nate, Merriman.... it was all meant to be.

Honestly, I've always thought that the main reason why the whole Eli Manning thing happened was because, deep down inside, the Manning clan has a wet dream of a Manning vs. Manning Superbowl someday. If Eli was on the Chargers then that would put both Manning brothers in the AFC, making that dream impossible.

Besides, I find it questionable that Peyton is gullible enough to believe anything Ryan Leaf has to say. I think it's fairly obvious to just about everyone that failure of the Ryan Leaf experiment wasn't really the fault of the Chargers. Heck, even Leaf himself has came out and admitted that he had an attitude problem back then.

So what, is this supposed to be justification for the slap in the face Eli gave the Chargers? Are people supposed to look at Leaf, the biggest headcase bust of 1990s and believe that Spanos and the GM/Coaches were primarily at fault for his blowup? And further are they supposed to believe that therefore Manning made the right move?

    **** Eli
    **** Archie
    **** Leaf
    **** em all!

ECry happened to be on the team that won the Super Bowl. ECry tried to choke the game away by fumbling (it bounced right back to him) and throwing what should have been a pick (Assante Samuel let it clang off his hands) on that "clutch" drive. He SHOULD have been the goat of the Super Bowl, but he got bailed out and the voters HANDED the MVP award to him because his last name is Manning.

The Giants defense held the team that had averaged almost 37 points per game to only 14 points. They shut down the QB who set an NFL record for TD passes, and the receiver who set the NFL record for TD receptions.

The Giants defense won the Super Bowl.
