The Germans are the first to qualify for the group stage (Final 16) of the Euro 2012 Championships with a 6-2 routing of Austria.

Russia, England, Italy, Netherlands and France are very close to qualifying.

Helluva lineup. They have to be considered "one" of the favorites.

    GK - Manuel Neyer
    D - Philipp Lamm
    D - Mats Hummels
    D - Per Mertesacker
D - Jerome Boateng (the good Boateng) :D
    D - Benedikt Howedes
    M - Mario Götze
    M - Bastian Schweinsteiger
    M - Mesut Özil
    M - Toni Kroos
    F - Lukas Podolski
    F - Miroslav Klose
    F - Thomas Müller
    F - Mario Gomez

    Loaded!

Wouldn't be surprised if Grosskreutz was getting some looks from Joachim Löw as well.

USA and Costa Rica tied at the half 0-0. USA maintaining great possession lacking the finishing touch. Could Alexi Lalas and Jorge Ramos be more of an odd couple??? :D

Although we didn't get the result, the USA played rather well. We controlled possession most of the game, just lacked finishing touches. I loved how Klinsmann was using a 4-3-3 formation. Work in progress, but looking good.

Officiating a futbol match is one of those things that is an awful lot more difficult than it looks.

I am kind of using the international break as a defrosting period. I get so wound up emotionally in the matches sometimes a week off is not too bad. Between the Gold Cup, Women's WC and Copa America... there was really no off season at all... (which I found to be excellent).

    Especially for Aussies. :roflmao:

Agreed. It is a welcome relief really. It's been a great, crazy 16 months of soccer.

Besides, a week off kept me undefeated in the Sandolfistan league. :D

Well it takes a super human effort to get me to passionately cheer for an US side. That woman certainly made a name for herself.

Hopefully that comes to an end when you face the mighty Al Abbas.

She most certainly did, but c'mon, you know my over-the-top enthusiasm for my US side is enough to get your endorphins going to cheer the flag. I still think about that crazy game against Brazil. Unreal.

Can't say I like my chances. I got a bit lucky last week, but I'll take it.

Hope we get Sir Boltman over here.

Well let us say that as your analysis of the US matches have become more grounded, you have been able to move me in the direction of a more polite neutrality. Cheering the flag is a ways off yet. :D

The thing about that game is that you have to stay on top of it a bit to win. Let us say you have no free transfers and you don't want to blow a wildcard for a minor adjustment. An injured or suspended player is a guaranteed zero. If you take the minus 4 hit to get a replacement and that guy plays over 60 min... then the hit is only minus two. If that guys scores or gets an assist... then you're into the plus.

You weren't lucky... Sir Boltfan took a calculated risk... (thinking he could spot you 16). I have spotted a few opponents 12 and still won. 16 is a bit too much in my experience.

Inter board transfers don't always work. I am thinking to monitor the old thread for about two weeks and then desert it.

It's been interesting to learn all of this. I've only payed minimal attention to the EPL, but with that, I only watched the teams, not the "players" on the teams. Quite a learning curve. Now if we did the Bundesliga, I would do much better as I pay attention to those players. Guaranteed, I still prefer to watch international soccer as opposed to club soccer.

I think I initially picked some players for how they performed on their respective international sides... that was a mistake that I didn't see coming. I already scrapped Drogba (before his injury last week), and now Pavlyuchenko has been tossed aside. Not sure he wasn't getting playing time with Totty, but he always plays well with the Russian national team.

Well the EPL is an international league of sorts. Lots of the UEFA sides would have trouble competing there. Teams like the USA and Russia can only play at the English Championship level... (or mid-table Bundesliga).

That said... Canucklestan would take the occasional beating in the Combined Counties League... hahaha...

Absolutely, and that's why I never payed much attention to it. I guess I'm more of a purist, and that's why I prefer international soccer over club soccer. I would prefer the EPL actually use English players. :D And not only that, money still rules the EPL, and I prefer more parity and equality. The Bundesliga is better at keeping their own players. But that's just me and how I look at it.

That being said, I do respect the level of talent in the EPL. IMO, I wonder if having that many "foreigners" in the league "hurts" the English Mens Team come tournament times.

Check out FC Bayern's squad list and it is hard not to think the situation has more do do with economics than purity.

Absolutely. It is a problem for them. The paradox is everybody from Aston Villa to Wolves want to win at any price... but they all support England. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Agreed. I definitely wasn't going to try and deny that. Sorta why I prefaced it with "bundesliga is better at keeping their own players". And perhaps, maybe that's another reason why the German team has been better than the English team. They play with/against each other in the same league more with its own players... perhaps.
