I might have to think on that real hard. If Philip really sent a text concerning the possibility of playing out his career elsewhere it could just be the smoke of a fire yet to start.

I think i'd be okay with if we got that back. Still who will be our QB of the future.

Throw in Kyle Orton and we're at the Jay Cutler package. Seems light.

Not sure. If we could guarantee landing Mariota and still have two 1st round picks next year, I'd probably pull the trigger.

But if we don't have a QB it makes everything else damn near worthless. Unless we're going to go out and sell our soul to go get Jay Cutler.

If you don't have an Aaron Rogers or a Tom Brady or a Phillip Rivers sitting in the hanger waiting to go, or you are not getting an equivalent in the deal - then I think it is terrible deal. You can trade Hershel Walker for a boatload of picks - but you don't trade Troy Aikman.

The only way you would even entertain this is if Rivers cannot/will not play in 2016. In that case you are going to be taking a 2-3 year step backwards, even if you can get a future top 10 QB (and I don't see any Andrew Luck caliber QBs this year).

No you don't. We do not have the next qb on the roster. Trading Rivers is saying you are burning everything down and starting over.

Jay Cutler? Matilack, put down the crack pipe.

    I didn't suggest it. :coffee:

What I meant is it is a horrible mind numbing alternative to being completley irrelevant after trading Rivers, if we were unable to secure Mariota or Winston. To be avoided at all costs.;)

Sure I would have to consider any offer....

I would also consider getting some OL help in front of Rivers, I can't blame Rivers for his comments the talent around him has only gone down hill for a few years.....

In broad brush terms, (and this thread was not meant to slight PR, just to see what this forum's fans felt about trading our star QB with one year left on his contract) I'd consider it more if I knew there was a mobile QB at our draft slot who could start immediately in a limited role, but has a higher upside. That would still leave us with a number one and an extra three this year and two number ones next year...all to be lavished upon the trenches.
But bottom line, tempting as it may seem on the surface, if I was TT I don't think I'd do it. We're not that desperate, PR is still amazing, the season ticket holders would revolt, and (unless you made a deep run into the playoffs in 2015) you could forget about a new stadium.

Maybe if that team were Tampa Bay I'd think about it.

I don't know if a team offers this much for Rivers. However, if it was 2 firsts and a third I would consider it if Rivers doesn't take Telesco's deal.

TT is cooking right now, I can promise you that. I would NOT trade any QB within the same conference.

I've been hearing a lot of discussions about Rivers and trades. I don't like it.. at all. I'd hate to be in QB purgatory, aka Cincinnati Bengals with Andy Dalton.

If you actually read the contents of the text, it's a big fat nothing burger.

One big factor is whether those "2 firsts and a third" are happening
in New England's draft slot, or Tampa Bay's...

But that doesn't create controversy, and therefore doesn't create hits.

I read it but maybe you're a better reader than I. Please tell what I missed on the suggested phrasing that leads to any definite conclusion of and in his alleged text?????????

    3 questions here

What exactly did the text message say?

What exactly makes anything Philip Rivers said in a text message in January binding to future contract negotiations for an extension?

Why is Philip Rivers' text messages leaking to the news in the first place?

It was in a recent UT article. I think it is much ado about nothing myself. I will see if I can find a link.

I was a little surprised at the Rivers text thing.

He always seemed to me to be real loyal-to-his-team kinda guy.

If his "I guess playing somewhere else is also possible" comment had come
as a response to a question about the possibility of him signing elsewhere,
I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

But since Rivers apparently introduced the concept...himself...out of the blue...
I gotta admit, that makes me wonder a bit...
Why toss the idea of signing elsewhere into the conversation...
    unless you're weighing it...
or want others to realize that you're thinking beyond the two choices of
retire or play another season in bolts...

The way I read it, that comment was in response to a question in the general area of the possibility. They asked if there is a possibility that it is his last season. Sure... Yes he expanded, but to me that is typical 'late in career contract negotiation talk'...

We'd still need to see the entire conversation to know the context.

But cutting out a small portion of conversation to jump to conclusions is status quo in sports analysis these days.

That reads to me as "No decisions have been made, that's a ways away, anything is possible" type response.

The only controversy is from those that haven't read it, which I posted a link for, jumping on those who have mentioned it. Again, I have no idea what PR is thinking about, I only stated that I couldn't blame if he chose not to re-sign with the Bolts for what ever reason he may have.

Fortunately we have the franchise tag so it's not really PR's decision

Its gonna happen soon. Rivers is 34, so not much left in the tank. We should take QB in the 4th and have learn behind Rivers.
